Peter Yates was a great British film professional. He is especially known for his thrillers, such as the classic Bullitt , with Steve McQueen, although he dabbled in the most diverse genres. The director died in London after a long illness at the age of 82, on January 9, 2011.

Born on July 24, 1929 in Aldershot, Hampshire (Great Britain), Peter Yates was the son of an army officer. At first he was going to be an actor, and he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, in the British capital.

After trying his luck as a race car driver, he became an assistant director to professionals such as Mark Robson ( The Inn of the Sixth Happiness ), J. Lee Thompson ( The Guns of Navarone ). He debuted as a director with episodes of the television series El santo . In cinema he made his debut with Summer Holidays , a mediocre musical that nevertheless achieved enormous success.

After the good reception of the thriller The Great Robbery , based on the attack on the Glasgow train, he was signed by Hollywood to shoot the memorable Bullitt , with Steve McQueen , remembered for his vibrant car chase through the streets of San Francisco. Another of his great thrillers was A Red Hot Diamond , with Robert Redford , about bank robbers. He also demonstrated his chops for drama with John and Mary , which starred Dustin Hoffman and Mia Farrow .

Although he continued to shoot thrillers, such as Suspect or The House on Carroll Street , Peter Yates shot a cult science fiction film, Krull , the comedy What the hell is going on here? and even Don Quixote (2000) , a television adaptation of the immortal work of Miguel de Cervantes.
