PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2015

Over the years, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has taken countless actions to promote their vision of vegetarianism. Every year they release calendars featuring some hot celebrities whose modesty is protected by bare sheets. Another novel approach PETA is taking to promoting vegetarianism is its annual list of the Sexiest Vegetarian and Vegan Celebs. By releasing lists like this, PETA wants to prove that plant-based foods can make you look incredibly sexy.

The list is compiled via a voting process in which approximately 100,000 participants select celebs from the original list of 50 women and 50 men nominated by the organization. The competition was launched in 2001 with only female celebrities, with male stars joining a year later.

The celebrities in this list chose plant-based foods for a number of reasons. Some of them recognized the tremendous benefits of vegetarianism, such as glowing skin and flawless appearance. Some of them cannot stand the animal cruelty associated with meat-based foods. Some have been practicing vegetarianism from a young age, while others are just finding their way. Without further ado, here is PETA’s list of Sexiest Vegetarian Celebs of 2015.

  1. Shania Twain

The “Queen of Country Pop” was the winner of 2001’s PETA Sexiest Celebrity Title for the first time. Shania Twain turned to vegetarianism influenced by her friend’s experiences. By the way, one of her friends who was suffering from cancer was advised by her doctor to stay away from meat for the best possible cure from the dreaded disease. Twain decided it would be better to change her lifestyle before she reached the same stage and took advice from a doctor to do so. She has often credited her plant-based diet for her timeless beauty and her calm and contented life. Although she is a passionate vegetarian, she still does not like to preach to others as she believes that this is a personal choice. She insists that it has to suit you emotionally, mentally and physically. And in her case, vegetarianism suits her perfectly.

  1. Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman is one of the many vocalists supporting the plant-based diet. The multiple Academy Award-winning actress has been a vegetarian since she was a teenager. In 2009, she went a step further and publicly stated that she had become a vegan. At her wedding to Benjamin Millepied on August 4, 2012 in Big Sur, California, only vegan food was served to the guests. Although she went vegan during her pregnancy to better meet the physical demands and to ensure her baby is born healthy, she is still a strict vegetarian.

In 2009, she came out in defense of Jonathan SafranFoer’s Eat Animals vegetarian manifesto, insisting that politeness to your tablemates should not trump morality. Portman believes what we eat symbolizes our values. When we teach children to eat, we also teach them values.

  1. Alicia Silverstone

Alicia Silverstone has been associated with PETA for years. She was voted PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian in 2004. In 2007, she stripped off clothes for the organization’s ad campaign in support of animal rights. Known for her iconic role as Cher Horowitz in ‘Clueless’, Silverstone has a deep love for animals and began a menagerie of rescued dogs in Los Angeles in 1996. After meeting an animal rights activist, she became a vegan in 1998. In several interviews, Silverstone has revealed that she has struggled with vegetarianism since she was eight. In addition to her passion for animal rights, she is also a successful author. Her first vegan nutrition guide, The Kind Diet, released in 2009, topped the hardcover Advice & Misc.List. Her 2014 follow-up book, The Kind Mama, was also a hit.

  1. Carrie underwood

Carrie Underwood, who is a passionate animal rights activist and vegan, became a vegetarian at the age of thirteen because she found the thought of eating one of her favorite animals repulsive. Underwood is a veteran of this list, topping the list twice – in 2006 and 2007. In an interview with PETA, Underwood emphasized that having animals around is more important to her than singing. She claimed that if she couldn’t sing anymore it would be terrible, but if she was never around animals she would just die. The Seven Grammy Award winner is allowing some slack in her vegan penchant for the holidays, and recently switched back to a vegetarian diet to cope with her pregnancy.

  1. Anthony Kiedis

Anthony Kiedis is one of the hottest 50s rockers. His trim body and rocking abs, which he often flaunts at his concerts, also make him one of the fitter musicians. Kiedis, who was a long-time vegetarian, became vegan after a doctor advised his son to follow a vegan diet. At the same time, he had watched a documentary about animal cruelty, which further reinforced his resolve to maintain a vegan diet. He even hired a dedicated vegan chef to cater to his dietary needs. However, in an interview he also revealed that he is not really vegan as he sometimes eats sustainable fish and eggs. However, like us, PETA loves Kiedis and therefore gives him some liberties.

  1. Olivia Wilde

Olivia Wilde is another celebrity on this list who became a vegetarian at a young age. She was named PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian in 2010. Wilde has also tried her hand at being vegan, but has struggled to stay away from cheese. She has often claimed that being vegan is a way of life that has made her feel good and look better physically. Better skin and improved energy levels are other benefits as listed by Wilde.

Olivia has revealed that her inspiration for turning vegan was Alicia Silverstone. Wilde revealed that Silverstone prepared delicious vegan recipes from her cookbook, The Kind Diet, for Olivia every day while she was filming the movie Butter in northern Louisiana. Discussing the results of this diet, Olivia claims she’s never looked or felt better in her life.

  1. Woody Harrelson

Woody Harrelson became vegan at the age of 24 after realizing he was lactose intolerant. Not only does he avoid meat and dairy, but Woody Harrelson also doesn’t eat sugar or flour. Aside from overcoming health issues, his raw vegan diet has helped him look younger and fitter. Harrelson lives with his family on an organic farm where he grows five different types of avocado trees and tons of coconuts. In November 2013, Harrelson took his interest in veganism to a new level by becoming co-owner of Sage – the world’s first organic vegan beer garden. He is also co-owner of a Canadian treeless paper company.

  1. Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain, who recently received well-deserved recognition for her acting skills, has been a vegetarian for 16 years and a vegan for seven. She topped PETA’s 2012 sexiest celebrities list and has been an outspoken animal rights activist for years. Chastain’s love for all things vegan runs in the family. Her mother, Jerri Hastey, is a vegan chef and used to run a vegan restaurant until Chastain recently bought her a food truck. Chastain’s veganism stems from her determination not to contribute to any kind of cruelty in the world. She wants to be thankful for every being that lives on earth and live a positive lifestyle.

  1. Kristen Bell

Kristen Bell is actively involved in animal rights. She currently supports the San Diego-based Helen Woodward Animal Center and while in Michigan she cared for animals from the Michigan Humane Society. She also regularly participates in fundraisers for the ASPCA and other non-profit organizations dedicated to protecting and supporting animals. Due to her love for animals, she became a vegetarian at the age of 11. As a child, she did not eat or chew meat, and did not like the taste or smell. She and her husband became vegan in 2012 after watching the documentary Forks over Knives.

  1. Jared Leto

Jared Leto has topped this list after once more sharing the top spot with Ellen Page in last year’s list. In addition to his incredible acting skills, Leto is also praised for his youthful looks. Leto, who has been a vegetarian for more than 20 years, credits his plant-based diet and yoga sessions for his good looks. He became vegan after discovering that dairy products contain pus. He’s currently trying out vegan tacos to gain the physique needed to play the role of Joker in the upcoming film Suicide Squad.
