Pernell Whitaker was an American professional boxer who had his fights from 1984 to 2001. He then worked as a boxing trainer in his hometown of Virginia after his retirement. But unfortunately, he had a car accident in which he lost his life on the spot at Virginia Street on July 14, 2019. Moreover, he earned his nickname ‘Sweet Pea’.
While not a particularly hard puncher, he is still considered a strong counter-puncher. Additionally, Whitaker was known for his exceptional defensive skills that applied a consistent offense, making it difficult for his opponents to hit with a solid punch. He was born on January 2, 1964 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was born as the son of parents Raymond Whitaker Sr. and his wife, Novella Whitaker. Sweet Pea has two siblings: a brother, Raymond, Jr., and a sister, Monique. Other than that, there is no other information about his parents, siblings, or documented upbringing.
Moreover, from the age of nine, he began his training in a career as an amateur boxer. In 1984 he won his amateur career with an Olympic gold medal. He had as many as 500 amateur fights but finished with 214 winning amateur fights including 201 and 91 knockouts.

With his defensive techniques and skillful counter punch, he had fought from 1984 to 2001. During his career, he won the four-weight world title with the lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight; the undisputed lightweight title; and the lineal lightweight and welterweight titles. Additionally, he holds the longest unified lightweight championship reign in boxing history to date with six title defenses.
In 2002, The Ring listed him as the 10th Greatest Fighter of the Last 80 Years. In 2001, he retired and then began another phase of his professional coaching career from 2005. As a trainer, he coached Joel Julio and also heavyweight trainer Calvin Brock. Also, as a professional boxer, he had about 46 fights in which he won 40. He had been inducted into the Hampton Roads Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
However, in his last fight with journeyman ‘Carlos Bojorquezz’ he broke his collarbone in the fourth round which forced him to retire. After the fight, he announced his retirement and recorded his professional career with 40-4-1 with 17 knockouts.

Talking about his personal life, he had married Rovanda Anthony. The couple’s wedding took place in the boxing ring of the Virginia Beach Pavilion Convention Center on January 2, 1964. However, their marriage did not go well and divorced after years. but no information about it. Additionally, the ex-couple welcomed four children: Devon Whitaker, Dominique Whitaker, Pernell Whitaker Jr. and Dantavious Whitaker. Besides, he also fathered a daughter Tiara Whitaker from his past relationship.
Additionally, in 2002, he was convicted of possession of cocaine after the judge found him in violation of the terms of his previous sentence in March. Additionally, he made national headlines in 2014 when he evicted his mother from the house he bought her in 1984 after winning a gold medal. Outside the Virginia court, he said the ruling in his favor was “a beautiful moment.”
The pro-boxer died at the age of 55 after being hit by a car in Virginia. Reportedly he was a pedestrian and while crossing the street in Virginia Beach he was hit and killed by a vehicle and the driver was left there. While the boxer was sentenced to death on the spot.
