The actor Pepe Rubio, specialized in charming playboy roles, died in Madrid on Thursday, March 15, at the age of 81, as a result of a long illness.

Born in Lubrín (Almería), José Rubio Urrea was the son of a miner who moved with his family to Barcelona after the war. He made his theater debut thanks to the Catholic Center of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, where he played a role in “El divino impatiente”, by José María Pemán.

In the 50s he moved to Madrid, where he got a job in a film production company, thanks to which he met the great Paco Rabal. This one helped him to be hired in the stable company of the Spanish Theater, and in the Lope de Vega company.

He obtained his greatest theatrical success with Alfonso Paso’s comedy Enseñar a un vergüenza -which he would later take to the screen. She broke all records in Spain by representing the play for 17 consecutive years, exceeding 10 million viewers, in 12,000 performances. At the end of the 90s, he revalidated his success with “What happened to the scoundrel?”, the sequel, written by Rafael Mendizábal. On stage, he specialized in similar cheeky roles, in titles such as “The Hotel of Troubles” or “The Flying Mink”.

In cinema, Rubio made his debut in La casa de la Troya , in 1959. Later he lavished himself in films that had the support of the public such as Siempre es domingo , El señor de La Salle , Escala en Hi-Fi , Los midshipmen , La casa de the Martinez or White on the outside, pink on the inside .

On April 10, 1979, the actor suffered a terrible mishap, as he was stabbed when he was leaving the house. He never hid his political sympathies, despite the fact that supporting the Popular Party is not the most common thing in his union. He was romantically related to the British model Leslie Adams, with María Luisa Merlo and with Carmen Flores, sister of Lola Flores.
