In Spain at the end of the 60s, where there were only two channels, in black and white, the broadcast of “El conde de Monte Cristo” caused a sensation. Its protagonist was linked to that character. Pepe Martín died on June 7, 2020, at the age of 87, in Madrid, as a result of a heart condition.

Born on September 7, 1932 in Barcelona, ​​José M artí n Balcells graduated in Law, and then studied International Law for three years in Paris, but there he realized that he preferred to dedicate himself to acting, and he made his debut with the National Theater Popular Francés, a company with which he would collaborate on various productions. Back in Spain, he made his television debut with El galán del bosque petrificado .

His popularity came with the popular Novela space , within which  The Count of Monte Cristo was broadcast , a version of the famous novel published by  Alexandre Dumas  in the “Journal des débats”, directed by  Pedro Amalio López , which had an enormous impact in 1969 Despite budget limitations, it had successful moments, such as the escape of the protagonist. In cinema, he participated in titles such as  La araucana,  The initiation in love ,   In the pale light of the moon  and in the last stretch of his career in  The conspiracy of El Escorial . 

Married to Silvia Lagos, Pepe Martín preferred above all to work in the theater. He starred in successful shows, such as “El beso de la mujer araña”, from 1981, where he shared the stage with Juan Diego .
