PEGGY SCHUYLER BIOGRAPHY, FAMILY
Peggy was born as Margarita Schuyler Van Rensselaer on September 19, 1758 in Albany, New York. She was born into a prominent family of Philip Schuyler, a general in the Continental Army, and Catharine Schuyler (née Van Rensselaer). She is the third daughter of her seven siblings.
Angelica Schuyler Church and Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton were her older sisters while Philip Jeremiah Schuyler was her brother. John Barker Church and Alexander Hamilton were his brothers-in-law. Peggy had a comfortable childhood as her family were among the wealthy Dutch landowners in Albany in the mid-1600s.
Her father, Philips Schuyler, was a war veteran and esteemed individual who was chosen by the Continental Congress as a Major General. He fought victoriously at the Battle of Saratoga. While his mother Catharine Schuyler was a descendant of the Van Rensselaer family whose life spanned from 1734 to 1803.
PERSONALITY OF PEGGY SCHUYLER
Being a daughter of the wealthy family, Peggy was kept with all possible love and respect for a woman during her time. Despite her wealthy family, she has always been described as a lively and admirable personality. She has been described as someone who can light up a room with their presence. She was very human and would always think of others first. Once, Peggy even risked her life, her baby, and her sister when a raiding party attempted to murder their father’s life. Realizing that the child had been left downstairs alone when the Schuyler sisters tried to run for their lives, Peggy was the only person who had the courage to run back downstairs to save the baby even when in danger. She managed to save the baby but she barely escaped death at the hands of the looters.
PEGGY SCHUYLER HUSBAND, CHILDREN
In June 1783, Peggy Schuyler tied the knot with her distant cousin Stephen Van Rensselaer III. He was much younger than her. At the time of their marriage, Peggy was 25 while Stephen was only 19. The duo had to flee in order to be able to marry in peace. At the time, Peggy’s husband was one of the richest men in all of America and a powerful landowner.
The couple’s marriage was blessed with three children, but they lost two children as infants. Perry’s only surviving child was Stephen Van Rensselaer IV. He served in the New York militia after graduating from Princeton University in 1808. He retired from the army with the tile of major general.
PEGGY SCHUYLER DEATH
As we all know, everyone has to face death sooner or later. However, Peggy Schuyler is the one who died much earlier than expected. She was suddenly ill in 1799 and with the advent of winter 1800, her condition worsened and she left the world on March 14, 1801 at age 42.
