Paul Michael Hill was one of the members of the Guildford Four who served time for the Irish Republican Army (IRA) bombings and the murder of British soldier Brian Shaw. The Guildford Four; Paul Hill, Gerry Conlon, Paddy Armstrong and Carole Richardson were wrongfully arrested in 1974 for a pub bomb. The police tortured four Guildfords for the crime and caused misery. The police also forced them to indicate that they had signed the confession.

Two years after the arrest, however, the IRA’s Balcombe Street gang retained responsibility for the property. To his detriment, the longest sentence ever handed down in an English court was handed down to Paul Hill. Fortunately, after a national campaign on October 19, 1989, they were released after spending 15 years in prison.

PAUL MICHAEL HILL: EARLY CHILDHOOD, EDUCATION AND FAMILY

Paul was born to his father, a Korean Navy soldier of Protestant faith while his mother was Catholic. Hill was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1954. In 2005, British Prime Minister David Cameron issued an unprecedented apology to the four after they spent 15 years in prison and 16 years after their release. The story of The Guildford Four was the basis for the Oscar-winning film In the Father’s Name, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Pete Postlethwaite.

PAUL MICHAEL HILL: GUILDFORD FOUR AND BOMBARDMENT

In December 1974, police arrested three men and a woman, later called the Guildford Four. They were, alongside Paul Hill, Gerry Conlon, Patrick Armstrong and Carole Richardson. At the time of the bombings, Conlon was in London, visiting his mother’s friend, Annie Maguire.

Police wrongly framed Guildford Four for the October 1975 bombings and sentenced him to life imprisonment. In March 1976, the Maguire Seven were wrongly accused of providing bombing material and other forms of assistance and sentenced to terms ranging from four to fourteen years. The Guildford Four were incarcerated for 15 years, while Giuseppe Conlon died towards the end of his third year in prison.

Both convictions were overturned years later by courts of appeal after the Guildford Four’s sentences were proven to be based on confessions obtained by coercion, although police did not release evidence directly accusing the Four. At the Balcombe Street Four trial in February 1977, the four IRA members asked their lawyers to draw attention to the fact that four entirely innocent people had served long sentences for three bombings in Woolwich and Guildford. Both charges were never brought against the Balcombe Street Five. The 1993 film In the Name of the Father is based on these events.
