PAU GASOL RETIRES

He said he doesn’t plan to retire anytime soon. In an interview he commented saying, “In two summers I might think about it a bit more,” Gasol said. “That might be an option then, maybe. And maybe not because I love what I do. I’m working my ass off to do what I’m doing at this point, to keep up with the pace of the game and the progress and development of the game today. I’m proud of it. It’s what makes me who I am. »

PAU GASOL PROJECT

He was drafted in 2001 and was picked for Round 1 to Pick 3. He was and picked for the Atlanta Hawks.

TRADE PAU GASOL LAKERS

On February 1, 2008, Gasol was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers with a 2010 second-round pick for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron McKie, the rights to Marc Gasol, and 2008 and 2010 first-round picks.

PAU GASOL RETURNED $2.5M TO SPURS IN BUYOUT

More information will be released on Spurs’ buyout deal with Pau Gasol, who has signed with league leaders Milwaukee Bucks. Under normal circumstances, the Spurs would owe him the remainder of this season’s salary plus the $6.7 million guaranteed to him next season, which would remain on their books unless they could trade those rights.

However, The Athletic’s Shams Charania says Gasol returned $2.5million to Spurs in his buyout deal to help them with a cap on space next season, meaning they will now only be paid for $4.2 million in 2019-20.
$2.5 million isn’t a lot in the NBA today, but it’s something. Maybe it’s the money Spurs need to re-sign Rudy Gay (despite holding his early bird rights) or the little boost they need to go deeper next season. It might even make the total amount owed to him low enough that someone else is willing to trade for the cap hit (although I’m not counting on that). Either way, it’s certainly a generous and elegant gesture on Gasol’s part.

The reality is, he’s been nothing but class the whole time he’s been here. He signed with the aim of helping Spurs move on from the Tim Duncan era, and that’s exactly what he did. He averaged 12.4 points and 8 rebounds while shooting more than 50% from three for the 2016-17 Spurs team that won 67 games and was perhaps one foot clear of Zaza Pachulia from a championship. Gasol started the following season long before a shoulder injury robbed him of his output, and an early season foot injury and the rise of Jakob Poeltl sealed his fate as a third player that season.

It was an unfortunate time for him, but his teammates want everyone to know what a consummate professional he was, never complaining and continuing to lead despite his reduced role. As Davis Bertans said:

“He never even complained in the locker room. Being in a difficult situation was a really professional thing to do. Everyone knows he wanted to play. It was evident. The guy practiced every chance he got. He will certainly be missed. He was an excellent teammate, he always helped everyone, a veteran with his experience. We wish him the best.

There are ways Spurs can leverage this generous move from Gasol even more, like using the stretch provision to spread his remaining salary over the next three seasons, or they can simply absorb the hit in one season and be fully released in 2020. Either way, the Gasol game in San Antonio with good intentions gave it their all and went off in style. His time here will always be appreciated and we wish him nothing but the best as his Hall of Fame career draws to a close.

WATCH: SPURS HONOR PAU GASOL WITH TRIBUTE VIDEO

Pau Gasol saw his tenure with the San Antonio Spurs come to an end earlier this month.

Gasol and the franchise agreed to a contract buyout and the veteran big man went on to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks. Ahead of Sunday’s game between the Bucks and Spurs, San Antonio chose to honor Gasol with a tribute video after his three seasons with the organization.

Going into Sunday’s contest, Gasol had only played in two of the four possible games for his new team. In a 117-98 win over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday, Gasol scored a point and had five rebounds in 11 minutes.

In 27 games with the Spurs this season, Gasol has averaged 4.2 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 46.6% from the field. During the month of February, the veteran big man recorded just 39 minutes for Spurs and fell out of the team’s frontcourt rotation. Gasol last played Feb. 24 for the team against the New York Knicks when he grabbed five rebounds and provided an assist in six minutes in a 130-118 loss to Spurs.

Gasol should provide more depth to a Bucks team that is currently the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Milwaukee has really thrived under new head coach Mike Budenholzer and Gasol could play minutes behind Giannis Antetokounmpo, Brook Lopez and Nikola Mirotic in the team’s frontcourt.

Spurs may not have had an extremely long chapter, but the organization has certainly gone out of its way to honor Gasol

SPURS RUIN PAU GASOL RETURN

Although it’s only been a week since Pau Gasol signed with the Milwaukee Bucks, he’s returned to San Antonio in a homecoming of sorts. He took the time at the end of Spurs’ victory over his new team to hug LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan as Bryn Forbes and Derrick White crossed the court to show their respect.

Not that Spurs fans should expect any less from the Spanish center who offered $2.5 million while being released to join a team that could offer more playing time. And he got him playing. Fifteen minutes, hitting one out of 3 as has become his custom over the past three seasons. He also managed 3 rebounds while fighting with his compadre LMA.

The post-game adoption serves as a reminder that this is just a game after all. Players come and go, but the mutual admiration these men have for each other playing at this level is clear in these moments.
