Patrick Stewart was born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, England on July 13, 1940, to parents Gladys Nee Barrowclough and Alfred Stewart . His father was a sergeant major in the army, while his mother was a weaver and textile worker.

He grew up in England with his two older brothers, Geoffrey and Trevor . For education, Stewart attended Crowlees Church of England Primary and Infant School. While at school, his English teacher asked her to perform a Shakespearean drama which led to his love of acting. Later, he enrolled at Mirfield Secondary Modern School to study theater where he met the actor. Brian blessed in a Mytholmroyd drama course. Since then, the two remain friends. Stewart dropped out of school to participate in the local theater and took a side job as a newspaper reporter. She eventually left his job choosing to act on him.

Stewart had a hard time as a child, as his father used to physically abuse his mother. He grew up in a home with domestic violence from his father, which made him aware and led him to become involved in activism. To eliminate this problem, he became a patron of a UK battered women’s charity, Refuge. Stewart also supports Combat Stress, a charity that provides therapeutic and clinical residential and community treatment to the former British Armed Forces. He is also a patron of the United Nations and even gave a speech at the UNA-UK Forum 2012 on July 14, 2012.

Stewart believes in fairness and equality and is a socialist who is a member of the Labor Party. He has been president of Huddersfield Town Academy, a club that identifies and develops young talent.

In 2001, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to acting and film. Again in 2010, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to the theater.
