In 2018, Benatar opened up about how she and Giraldo bonded when he was brought in to work on the song “Heartbreaker” for her 1979 debut album In the Heat of the Night . It had been written from a male perspective, which was the first thing she changed.

“When I got it, it had all these colloquialisms in English, and I changed a bunch of the lyrics to match,” she says. “But the sex of the thing – folding the sex and having a woman sing it instead… that was exactly what I wanted.” Then she struggled with the sound she wanted: “I heard it in my head, but I couldn’t get what I heard to play. And the minute he walked in, he knew exactly what I was talking about. He played it exactly the way I wanted it, and it all grew out of that.
