I had the chance to hear the new record ahead of time and it’s absolutely stunning, with echoes of Ryan Adams, the Jayhawks, Tom Petty. Can you tell me a bit about how the album developed?
First of all thank you, that’s really nice. I write a lot you know, this is my tenth album, and I had all these songs and I kind of started putting them together. I was playing through all of them and I realized there was this group of about 9 or 10 that had this really cohesive feel with each other, and it was that kind of American theme. As there are 2 or 3 on the record that relate directly to Detroit, Yellowstone National Park, a story about my grandparents and my father who are American; but with all of them, it felt like there was this running theme throughout, this kind of epic, trippy American landscape on the high road. So yeah, it’s interesting, it kind of became this big… well, you know,
I know your dad is American even though you didn’t grow up there. Have you always felt a connection with the United States?
Definitively. I mean I’ve been going to the states since I was 2, my dad grew up in New Jersey and I still have tons of family around that kind of east coast area, so yeah, it’s It’s like a sort of second home tome. And of course, I toured a lot there too. So it’s a funny thing, I never thought I’d do an American record but it happened so here we are.
You said you thought the record had a very strong sense of Americana and I think that’s true in a geographical and musical sense. I think there is definitely a link to ‘Travelling Alone’, for example from your album ‘Whispers II’ which I always thought was an absolute country classic. Have you been interested in the genre for a while?
Of course, yeah, I’ve grown up with American songwriters all my life – listening to Paul Simon and Bob Dylan and people like John Prine, you know, real classical songwriters, they’ve been the lion’s share of what I really focused on as a writer, but also as influences. I mean Americana has always been an influence, I think I just embraced it a bit more this time around.
In the United States, Billboard lumps Americana and folk into one chart, separate from country, but they’re all genres that tell stories that I think fit your music so well.
Yes, that’s right, and I think folk is just the English version of that right? If you go back to primitive folk, it’s all about storytelling, that’s exactly what it is, a guy telling a story in a 50-person pub with a guitar you know. I think all of this music stems from the same thing – it’s this need, probably a very old basic human need, to tell stories and I think that’s probably why we still respond to it in such a moving way .
Have you ever considered adding ‘A Kindly Reminder’ as a bonus track on the new album?!
I didn’t (laughs) I didn’t think it would go too well with American demographics or some of them. You know it’s funny, I wrote this song right after Trump came to power. I’m not too political in my music, there are a few songs where I touched on politics but I leave that to people who really know their stuff. I’m a normal guy, I haven’t spent my 10,000 hours in politics, so I don’t feel like I have a particular opinion or anything particularly valid to say, but you know, someone like Donald Trump is so terrifying that I just felt moved to voice my opinions. And you know what, that was the first thing I
And you?
Yeah, sure, a lot of Americans, and not just Americans, a lot of people on YouTube were like, ‘Okay, cool, I’m not going to listen to Passenger anymore’ and all that kind of stuff. I don’t think a political opinion has to turn someone’s music off you… but either way it’s fine, it’s all good, it all comes out in the wash!
