Owen Wilson

We are used to seeing him in crazy movies, with surreal humor, but he has managed to captivate a large audience with his likeable and always quirky characters.

He is one of those actors who are pigeonholed in a specific type of roles. Today it is impossible for us to think of Owen Wilson playing a serious character and he has hardly worked in other genres other than comedy. Perhaps the soldier in Behind the enemy line stands out among them. But, despite this lack of variety, the numbers and the box office results speak for themselves: Owen Wilson has a gift for reaching the viewer, for making himself loved and endearing in his own way, because there is something about him that also makes him vulnerable. … Apart from his unmistakable physique – he has broken his nose countless times – his roles ooze a striking lack of double intentions, of insane ins and outs: he is always simple, direct, behaves with unprecedented innocence and blurts out the first thing that comes to mind. comes into his head (which may not be very satisfying for the other characters, as opposed to the viewer). And, apparently, that frankness is also used on filming, since he is famous for giving free rein to his inventiveness while he is in front of the camera.

Owen Cunningham Wilson was born on November 18, 1968, in Dallas, Texas. He is the son of an advertising executive and a photographer. His two brothers are also actors, Andrew Wilson (the eldest) and Luke Wilson (the youngest). He was not a model student, as he was expelled from St. Mark Academy in Dallas in tenth grade. After finishing in another school he went to study Literature at the University of Texas. This is a very special moment in his life, because there he met Wes Anderson , who has been his friend and mentor ever since. In fact, Wilson has participated in all of Anderson’s films and his cinema is so closely related to the actor that it is not clear who is shaping whom. In 1996 they both wrote the script for a thief who steals from another thief .. The script found its way to James L. Brooks , who lent money to the creators to make the film. Although it flopped at the box office, Anderson and the Wilson brothers (Owen and Luke) decided to move to Hollywood and become filmmakers.

In a short time, Owen began to work as a secondary in films of a certain renown but of rather pathetic quality, titles such as Un luco a domicilio (1996), with Ben Stiller , Anaconda (1997), with Jennifer López , The Haunting (La guarida) (1999), with Catherine Zeta-Jones , or Breakfast of Champions (1999). But in 1998 he had co-written with Wes Anderson the comedyBut in 1998 he had co-written the comedy Rushmore Academy, Anderson’s behind-the-scenes debut. The reviews were good and the film began a series of collaborations between Anderson-Wilson that would forge a peculiar sense of humor, between the absurd and the tragicomedy, with outlandish characters and surreal plots. This is how The Tenenbaums (2001) –whose screenplay was nominated for an Oscar–, Life Aquatic (2004) or Trip to Darjeeling (2007) came later. In any case, although Owen Wilson has participated as an actor in all of Anderson’s films, he considers himself primarily a writer and being a screenwriter is what he enjoys the most. He actually felt very sad when due to time constraints he had to give up writing the script for Life Aquatic with Anderson., which would have been their fourth book collaboration.

In 2000, Wilson began appearing in better quality comedies, such as the Shanghai Kid. From East to West , although he often worked as a secondary, playing the weirdo friend. Such was the case with Los padres de ella , which has had two sequels to it. In that film, she again coincided with Ben Stiller, an actor who is part of, let’s say, her comic crew, a series of guys like Vince Vaughn , Will Ferrell or Jack Black , specialized in goofing off. Specifically, his work with Stiller extends to ten films, including Zoolander (2001), a film that has a large number of fans; Starsky & Hutch (2004), unsuccessful remake of the famous television series; and the two parts of Night at the Museum (2006), a pleasant fantasy adventure with a good dose of laughter and action.

However, despite the professional success, it seems that happiness did not quite settle in Owen’s life. The actor went through several relationships that ended in failure: with Demi Moore , Sheryl Crow and twice with Kate Hudson . And the terrible proof that Wilson was not happy is that he hit rock bottom in August 2007. The actor nearly died after a suicide attempt. He himself has once spoken of his instability: “With age I realize that mental health is as fragile as physical health. I am definitely an ups and downs person. Apprehensive. That type of optimist who deep down knows that things are not going to turn out well.

But after that critical moment, Owen Wilson’s life seems to have slowly taken on a new perspective. He has participated in some more classic, romantic and optimistic films, such as A Couple of Three (2008), with the likeable Jennifer Aniston , and has become the protagonist of Woody Allen ‘s comedy Midnight in Paris , alongside Rachel McAdams and Marion Cotillard . . And, as if that were not enough, on January 14, 2011, his first child, Robert, was born as a result of his relationship with Joan Duell.
