Over 1,200 artisans now jobless over Tejuoso Market inferno

Following the fire that decimated the popular Tejuoso Market’s tailoring section, no less than 1,200 artisans in Yaba, Lagos, are now jobless.

At least 1,600 industrial, weeping, and straight sewing machines were destroyed in Tuesday’s mid-afternoon fire outbreak, leaving the fabric artisans out of work.

This was confirmed on Wednesday during a post-disaster loss and needs assessment by Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos State Territorial Coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.

150 lock-up shops were reportedly affected by the fire, which was caused by an industrial generating set.

Farinloye, who was acting in place of NEMA Director General Alhaji Mustapha, comforted the artisans and urged them to view the circumstance not as a short-term setback but rather as a test from God that would lead to greater success.

Comrade Godwill Okorie, the chairman of the traders, stated that he was uncertain as to what started the fire because of how quickly it spread throughout the entire market.

He pleaded with loan facilitators to kindly take the disasters into account and give them more loans so they could begin and service the loans. The assessment, according to NEMA, “revealed that there were approximately 150 lock-up shops with at least eight registered traders occupying each shop.”

This new development comes shortly after a generator explosion set fire to a building on Adeola Odeku in Victoria Island, Lagos. Vehicles and nearby buildings were damaged by the Victoria Island fire incident.

According to a statement by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) via Twitter, the second fire incident involved the clothing and tailoring materials section of the market.

The statement, signed by the Director, LSFRS, Adeseye Margaret, said the fire was subdued by firefighters.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is battling an inferno at the Tailor Market behind the ultra-modern Tejuosho Market, Yaba, Lagos. The fire which involved the clothing and tailoring materials section of the market is being subdued by the Lagos Firefighters. Update to follow as the situation unfolds,” it read.
