Outrage as COAS orders release of detained romantic soldier

There has been a lot of outrage as Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya Chief of Army Staff ordered the immediate release of a detained female soldier, Hannah Sofia.

You will recall that the female soldier was held after she publicly accepted the marriage proposal of a youth corper simply identified as Remi at the National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Kwara State.

More so, Sofiat was detained for ‘violating military rules and regulations by getting involved in a public display of an amorous relationship with a paramilitary trainee – a corps member.

However, the detention caused outrage from Nigerians who believed it barbaric and also she was denied her right to love.

A petition for her release on the Change.org platform got over 10,000 signatures

The family of the corper had also appealed to the military authorities to pardon Akinlabi, saying the duo met three years ago in Abeokuta where they started their love life.

In what appeared as a Christmas gift to the family and many Nigerians, the COAS ordered the release of the romantic soldier on Saturday.

While speaking with Punch, a military source said that the Chief of Army staff had intervened and asked that she should be pardoned.
Also, the source added that the female soldier had been warned and reprimanded for breaching the extant rule guiding the conduct of military personnel.

“The Chief of Army staff has intervened in the matter. He asked that she should be pardoned. The military authorities have considered the plea of the COAS and said she be released forthwith. Before the end of the day, she should have reunited with her family. ”

According to the source, this is in line with the COAS vision to have a Professional Nigerian Army Ready to Accomplish Assigned Missions within a Joint Environment in Defence of Nigeria.
