TEMPTATIONS OF OTIS WILLIAMS

When a teenager, Otis Miles, Jr. became interested in music and adopted his mother’s maiden name for his stage name, and like Otis Williams put together a variety of singing groups. Otis Williams and the Siberians, El Domingoes and Distants were among those groups. In 1959, The Distants recorded a local hit with lead vocals by Richard Street, co-written by Williams and their manager/producer Johnnie Mae Matthews, titled ‘Come On’

Later recordings by the Distants were not as good, and Williams and his friends/bandmates Elbridge “Al” Bryant and Melvin Franklin left the Distants after an offer from Berry Gordy of Motown Records. The Primes’ Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams later joined Williams, Bryant and Franklin to form The Elgins, who signed ‘The Temptations’ to Motown in March 1961.

Over the span of nearly five decades, The Temptations were one of the most influential acts in soul music, during which singers such as David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards, the former Distant Richard Street, Damon Harris, Ron Tyson, Ali-Ollie Woodson, Theo Peoples, Ray Davis and former Spinners singer GC Cameron have all been members.

The band’s lineup changes were so frequent, stressful, and troubled that Williams and Melvin Franklin promised each other never to leave the band. Franklin remained in the band until 1994 when he became physically unable to continue. On February 23, 1995, Franklin died, leaving Otis Williams, then 53, as the last surviving original member of the quintet.

Williams co-authored Temptations, with Patricia Romanowski, a 1988 book that served as both the band’s autobiography and history. Ten years later, the novel was adapted into The Temptations, an NBC television miniseries. Williams was portrayed by actor Charles Malik Whitfield.

In 1989, Otis Williams was inducted as a member of the Temptations into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In May 2006, Williams received an honorary doctorate from Stillman University.
