Oscar’s Facial Hair: The Good and the Ugly

Published

on

This year the biggest men’s trend at the Oscars was facial hair. Avoided for years, today’s male celebrities are now embracing what nature gave them. It seemed like every other celebrity from George Clooney to Russell Brand sported facial hair. The most popular style? The neat beard. The distinctive mustache was surprisingly absent.

As with any trend, some men have made it gloriously, while others have veered more into mad-hobo territory. Conclusion: Here is a list of the best and worst hairstyles from Oscar night 2013:

The Worst Hairstyles of the 2013 Academy Awards

Ben Affleck:

Ben Affleck was one of the first A-list celebrities to shave. Unfortunately for him, the style isn’t flattering for his face structure. The beard he wore to the Oscars consisted of a neatly trimmed beard, sideburns, and a mustache combo. Unfortunately, the look came across as more axeous than attractive. The length of his hair and the wild style contrast between the classic beard and the modern cut of his hair also confused the eye.

Russell Brand:

Russell Brand has always been known for his crazy hair, and Oscar’s night was no exception. Russell Brand paired his medium-length beard with a mustache shadow and loose, shoulder-length tresses. The look lived up to his reputation for wild hair, making him look like an Irish medieval warrior or hobo begging for money at the side of the road.

Questlove:

Questlove was a medium height and well trimmed beard and mustache combo to the Oscars. The beard would have been attractive on its own, but instead of pairing the beard with a matching hairstyle, he chose to pair the beard with an afro that stuck out a few inches in all directions from his head. It was too much hair for one head.

Best facial hairstyles from the 2013 Academy Awards

Bradley Cooper:

Bradley Cooper exuded a touch of 1960 with his combo of slicked hair and trimmed beard. The combination of longer locks on top and a shorter hairstyle on the face gave Bradley Cooper an elegant and sophisticated look.

George Clooney:

Always the king of style, George Clooney also rocked the beard trend at the Oscars. He combined his medium-length beard with a traditional mustache and brushed his hair back from his face.

Paul Rudd:

In a surprising move, baby Paul Rudd also transforms his look with facial hair. Paul took a chance by getting close to hobo country with hair almost to his shoulders and a tattered beard. However, the feathered hairstyle and trimmed beard make for a classy look.

In 2013, facial hair is having a moment. Never before have so many beards, mustaches and sideburns been present at a Hollywood event. No one knows how long this trend will last, but now is the perfect time to try those facial hairstyles that you’ve always wanted to try but thought were too crazy for everyday wear.
