Of Guatemalan origin, Óscar Isaac Hernández Estrada was born on March 9, 1979, although he quickly moved to Miami, United States, where he grew up. He has Cuban roots from his father, Óscar Gonzalo Hernández, and Guatemalan roots from María Eugenia Estrada, his mother. He also has European ancestry from his maternal grandmother, who was French. This multicultural mix gives him the benefit of defending himself in English and Spanish. During his youth he became passionate about music and began playing the guitar and singing in a group known as The Blinking Underdogs.

At twenty-six, he graduated from the Juilliard School, but three years earlier, in 2002, he made his big-screen debut with a tiny role in the ill-fated Double Deadly Impact . We could also see him in a chapter of the Law and Order series the same year in which he got his first leading role in Natividad (2006), a biblical story about Mary and Joseph, for which he garnered good reviews. His next few years resemble the construction of a pyramid, a slow ascent, without fissures and with the exception of working in large productions. Che, the Argentine , Ágora and Robin Hood began to give him some prestige and his roles were growing in importance.
