Ogun State Government, yesterday, said it deployed technological innovation to mitigate the effects of climate change in schools to enhance a suitable academic environment.

The state’s Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Abosede Ogunleye, who spoke during the “Tour of Ogun State” by participants of the Senior Executive Course 45 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos, said part of the technology deployed includes renewable energy through the installation of solar powers in schools.

She said teachers were also trained to become active citizens and earth protection ambassadors with leadership skills for the promotion of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adding that the creation of eco-friendly teaching and learning was stimulated.

The Permanent Secretary said the state government, in collaboration with Nestle Nigeria Plc., sponsored the training of 150 students on climate change development initiative, saying this really helped the state’s contingents during the last edition of the JETS competition to win several awards for converting the waste materials to valuable products, such as interlocking bricks.

Ogunleye noted that tree planting was included in the secondary school curriculum as a topic under Social Studies, as part of measures to mitigate the effects of climate change, adding that the school segment of the yearly planting of one million trees by the state’s Ministry of Forestry was carried out by students.

Meanwhile, in their separate presentations, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye (OOU), Prof. Charles Adekoya and Director, Institute of Vocational Training and Research in Agriculture, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State, Prof. Akiyode Olawunmi, suggested renewable energy through wind farms to mitigate effects of climate change, saying access to energy has positive impact on people’s health and the economy.

Also, in her remarks, the Head of the Team, Prof. Oluwafunmilayo Para-Mallam, assured the state government of the group’s support to further achieve the United Nations SDGs, saying choosing the state as their focus of study has been a blessing to them.
