Noah Baumbach was born in Brooklyn on the 3rd of September, 1969. His mother, Georgia Brown was a film critic for The Village Voice while his father, Jonathan Baumbach was an author of experimental fiction and the co-founder of Fiction Collective. He also taught at Stanford University and Brooklyn College, he was a film critic for Partisan Review. His parents divorced when he was still an adolescent, and his experience served as an inspiration for his 2005 films, The Squid and The Whale. He has three other siblings and two are from his father’s previous marriage.
Noah Baumbach grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn. At a young age, he picked interest in filmmaking and the films that influenced his interests are, The Jerk, Animal House, Heaven Can Wait, The World According To Garp, and others. Jason Blum produced Noah Baumbach’s first film, Kicking and Screaming in 1995. Afterwards, he worked for a short while at The New Yorker.

Early Career
Noah Baumbach made his writing and directing debut in 1995 with Kicking and Screaming, a comedy-drama directed by Jason Blum. He was chosen as one of Newsweek’s Ten New Faces of 1996.
In 1997, he wrote and directed Mr Jealousy, and afterwards co-wrote and directed the New York-set comedy of manners Highball. But according to a 2005 interview in The A.V. Club, he disowned the film.
In 2004, Noah Baumbach launched his film collaboration with Wes Anderson by co-writing The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou alongside Wes Anderson. Come 2005, he released his fourth feature film, The Squid and The Whale which was a semi-autobiographical comedy-drama about his childhood in Brooklyn. The film was a critical success and it earned Noah Baumbach two awards at the Sundance Film Festival (2005) and an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. It also received six Independent Spirit Award Nominations, three Golden Globe nominations, and the New York Film Critics Circle. Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review all voted the film the best screenplay of the year.
Breakthrough
He wrote and directed Margot at the Wedding (2007), shot in April 2006 in Hampton Bays and City Island, Bronx, and it was released in the United States by Paramount Vantage on November 16, 2007. Noah Baumbach helped to write and direct the short films, Clearing the Air and New York Underground which aired on Saturday Night Live. The films were co-written and co-produced by Fred Armisen and Bill Hader. He also co-wrote the 2009 film version of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox with Wes Anderson who was the director. The film was a critical success and it appeared in many critics’ top 10 lists of the year. It also received the Academy Award, British Academy Film Award, and Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Animated film. Unfortunately, the critical success the film got didn’t push a financial success.
In March 2010, his film, Greenberg, was released and it was also nominated for the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. And in 2012, he directed Frances Ha which he co-wrote with Greta Gerwig. The film played at the Toronto International Film Festival and Greta Gerwig received a Golden Globe Award nomination for her performance.
Noah Baumbach co-wrote a screenplay for DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. He also worked on HBO’s adaptation of the Jonathan Franzen novel, The Corrections, but the pilot was not completed and HBO passed on the project.
Noah Baumbach wrote and directed the 2014 comedy-drama, While We’re Young. The film was released by A24 Films on March 27, 2015, and the film grossed more than all of the grossing of his previous films at the United States box office.
2019-Present
In 2019, Noah Baumbach wrote, directed, and produced Marriage Story and it premiered to great acclaim at the Venice Film Festival before it was released on Netflix on the 6th of November, 2019. The film went on to receive six Academy Award nominations likewise for Best Picture, and Best Original Screenplay.
His next feature film was in 2020. White Noise is an adaptation of the 1985 novel of the same name by Don DeLillo. The film reunited him and his wife, Greta Gerwig, and Adam Driver, with backing from Netflix. The project kickstarted in 2021.

Noah Baumbach got married to actress Jennifer Jason Leigh on the 2nd of September, 2005. Although they’re divorced following Jennifer Leigh’s file for divorce on November 15, 2010, in Los Angeles, they have a son (Rohmer) together.
In late 2011, Noah Baumbach became romantically involved with actress and co-collaborator, Greta Gerwig after they had met earlier in 2010 during her production in Greenberg. In March 2019, it was announced that they had both welcomed a son, (Harold).
