In this post, RNN compiles the list of Nigeria’s most outstanding governors in 2023. These governors were selected based on their performance in the year 2023. The factors considered include their efforts in providing good governance, leadership, and service delivery to the people of their states.
1. Alex Chioma Otti (Governor of Abia State)
Alex Chioma Otti (born 18 February 1965) is a Nigerian economist, banker, investor, philanthropist, and politician, serving as the current Governor of Abia State in Nigeria. He is from Isiala-Ngwa. Otti is the former Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank Plc, a retail financial institution in Nigeria.
Alex Otti was a gubernatorial candidate of Abia State on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). On 31 December 2015, The Court of Appeal which sat in Owerri removed Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party as governor of Abia State and declared Otti the winner of the state’s April 11 and April 25 Governorship elections.
Speaking during the inauguration of Cemetery Market Road Phase 1 in Aba, Otti said his plan for Abia state is clear, adding his administration is making the best decisions and investing money where it will have a multiplier effect on the economic and social life of residents.
The governor was joined by his Deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu and senior members of his cabinet for the commissioning exercise of Phase 1 of the Cemetery Road, Shalom Road, and Emelogu Road.
2. Chukwuma Charles Soludo (Governor of Anambra State)
Charles Chukwuma Soludo ( born 28 July 1960) is a Nigerian politician, banker, and economics professor who is also a former governor and chairman of the board of directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He started serving as governor of Anambra State in March 2022.
Anambra indigenes and residents would agree that Governor Charles Soludo should makes the list of Nigeria’s Most Outstanding Governors in 2023. As governor, Soludo has worked to improve security, combat corruption, and develop infrastructure. He has also focused on improving the state’s economy and attracting investment.
3. Babagana Umara Zulum (Governor of Borno State)
Another of Nigeria’s Most Outstanding Governors in 2023 is Governor Zulum. Babagana Umara Zulum (born 25 August 1969) is a Nigerian professor and politician who has served as governor of Borno State since 2019 under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Borno State used to be a state dreaded by most Nigerian citizens, Governor Zulum has worked on the security of the state and also improved the state’s economy.
4. Oluwaseyi Abiodun Makinde (Governor of Oyo State)
Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde (born 25 December 1967) is a Nigerian engineer, businessman and politician who has served as governor of Oyo State since 2019. On April 7, 2022, Seyi Makinde declared his intention to run for another four years as clamoured by the good people of Oyo State due to his groundbreaking achievements since resuming office in 2019. He made this declaration in a message posted on his social media channels stating that “if the people of Oyo state desire it, we will serve four more years”.
He contested in the 2023 general election in his bid for reelection as the governor of Oyo state on March 18, he won the election polling the highest votes to beat his closest rival Teslim Folarin of the All Progressive Congress (APC). He was declared the winner and governor-elect for Oyo state on March 19 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) having met and satisfied all the requirements of the law.
Governor Seyi Makinde has been severely referred to as one of the best Governors Oyo state has had. He also made it to our list of Nigeria’s Most Outstanding Governors in 2023.
5. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu (Governor of Lagos State)
Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu (born 25 June 1965) is a Nigerian politician who has served as the governor of Lagos State since 2019. He became governor under the platform of the All Progressives Congress after contesting and unexpectedly winning the APC gubernatorial primaries against incumbent governor Akinwunmi Ambode in October 2018.
As Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has worked to improve security, combat corruption, and develop infrastructure. He has also focused on improving the state’s economy and attracting investment.
