Nigerian Resident Doctors Strike Over Colleague's Abduction
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has begun a 7-day warning strike to protest the abduction of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola. She has been held captive for eight months, sparking widespread concern among healthcare professionals.
Dr. Dele Abdullahi, NARD President, announced the strike during a virtual emergency meeting of the National Executive Council on Sunday.
He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The strike is total, and there will be no concessions or emergency care during this period.”
The strike commenced at midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024.
NARD has instructed all centers, both federal and state, to ensure full compliance with the strike. This includes proper handover of patients to consultants.
Any center found defaulting on NARD’s decision will face heavy fines and exclusion from the forthcoming NARD Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Dr. Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was abducted on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew.
While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity. This incident has led to protests in tertiary hospitals nationwide, with NARD members demanding her safe release.
The strike aims to pressure authorities to secure Dr. Popoola’s freedom and address the growing concern of kidnapping among healthcare professionals.
NARD’s actions seek to ensure a safe working environment for doctors and prompt action from authorities to prevent such incidents.
