Nigeria spends over $500m on dairy product imports yearly – Obaseki
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State emphasized the need for Nigeria to redirect its focus toward agriculture and domestic production
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State emphasized the need for Nigeria to redirect its focus toward agriculture and domestic production in order to stimulate economic growth and development. During a courtesy visit by officials from Heifer International at the Government House in Benin City, the governor highlighted the significant annual expenditure of approximately $500 million the nation incurs on dairy imports annually.
He acknowledged that Nigeria, with its vast population and resources, should prioritize agricultural production to address food security, provide adequate protein for its people, and generate wealth for its citizens. Governor Obaseki recognized the historical shift away from agriculture due to the discovery of crude oil, which led to a reliance on imports and the neglect of domestic food production. He emphasized the urgency of reclaiming self-sufficiency by producing the food we consume instead of depleting our resources by relying on foreign imports, which costs the country billions of naira and dollars each year.
