Nigeria, South Africa to push Africa’s 5G connections to 150 million by 2028

A leading global technology company, Ericsson, predicted a rapid expansion of 5G across Sub-Saharan Africa, with Nigeria and South Africa taking the lead. By 2028, the two nations will increase the number of 5G connections on the continent from 7 million to 150 million.

The technology, which according to the report will drive smart industries and agriculture, is also anticipated to have a significant positive impact on the continent’s two main economies.

According to the estimate, the number of 4G subscriptions would increase further during the same time period, from 260 million in 2022 to 600 million in 2028.

Despite the fact that 2G connections still account for almost half of all mobile subscriptions in SSA, Ericsson predicted a sharp fall in 2G users over the following six years as users transition to 4G and 5G networks.

Nigeria, with a population of over 200 million, not only has the biggest economy in Africa, but it also presently has the most mobile subscribers on the continent and is anticipated to lead the way with 5G. The nation has already granted 5G licenses to MTN and Mafab Communications, two telecoms providers, last year.

While MTN has subsequently launched the nation’s first 5G network, Mafab is anticipated to launch the network in January 2019. As of yesterday, Airtel was the only bidder for a third 5G license, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Keep in mind that South Africa launched 5G in Africa first in 2020. MTN, Vodacom, and Rain, three significant carriers, have set up 5G networks in the nation. Hossam Kandeel, vice president and head of the global customer unit at Ericsson Middle East and Africa, commented on the news.

“Connectivity in Africa plays a critical role in the upliftment of the continental economy. The growth in 5G and 4G network coverage will become a major catalyst for innovation, connection, and opportunity for Africans everywhere. We are proud to be a part of this journey.”

The analysis predicts that, despite ongoing and anticipated economic difficulties in many parts of the world, the number of 5G subscriptions will surpass one billion globally by the end of this year and reach five billion by the end of 2028. It further states that between July and September 2022, around 110 million additional 5G subscriptions were added globally, increasing the total to about 870 million.
