On December 16, the British actor Nicol Williamson, who suffered from esophageal cancer, died in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the city where he has lived for the last two decades. His son Luke gave the news of the death a month later.

Actor of great stature not only physically (1.91 meters) but acting, born in Hamilton, Scotland, on September 14, 1936, in San Sebastián he was awarded as best actor in 1969 for  Laughter in the dark . Highly regarded for his work on stage -his interpretation of Hamlet is considered mythical, on a par with that of John Gielgud , and he would also do it in the cinema under the direction of Tony Richardson- , he was nominated twice for a Tony. The BAFTAs would also take him into consideration with three nominations.

His most popular film roles are surely the wizard Merlin in the Arthurian  Excalibur  (1981) and Little John in the twilight version of Sherwood’s Archer  Robin and Marian  (1976). His compositions of a suicidal Irish soldier in  El cannon Bofors  (1968) and his foray into the world of Graham Greene in  The Human Factor  (1979), directed by Otto Preminger , are also noteworthy . The actor’s last foray into film was in a forgettable superhero movie,  Spawn  (1997).

With a reputation as an eccentric, quite a character, he married in 1971 also actress Jill Townsend , with whom he coincided on the screens in  Elemental, Dr. Freud (The Seven-Per-Cent Solution)  and who survives him. He with her he had a son.
