In Chalfont St. Giles, Buckinghamshire, England, on January 7, 1967, Sir Nicholas William Peter Clegg was born. He was the third of Hermance van den Wall Bake and Nicholas Peter Clegg’s four children. Clegg completed his education at the College of Europe, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Cambridge. Before beginning a career in politics, he was an award-winning writer for the Financial Times who had also worked as a skiing instructor at a bank.
Career
Nick Clegg declared himself a supporter of the Liberal Democrats. In May 2005, he was elected to represent Sheffield Hallam in parliament. From March 2006 to December 2007, Clegg was the Home Affairs Spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats. He began serving as the Liberal Democrats’ leader at that point. Beginning in May 2010, he worked for Prime Minister David Cameron as the United Kingdom’s Deputy Prime Minister and Lord President of the Council. During his time in office, he promoted tax reduction, lower defense expenditure, electoral reform, and a stronger emphasis on environmentally sound activities.
Only eight seats were won by the party in the House of Commons during the 2015 general election, which resulted in Clegg’s resignation as party leader and removal from his position as deputy prime minister. After a referendum that backed leaving the European Union, Nick returned to the Liberal Democrat frontbench in 2016. From July 2016 until June 2017, he served as the party’s spokesperson for both international trade and exiting the European Union. After losing the 2017 general election, Clegg relocated to the United States and was chosen by Mark Zuckerberg to serve as Facebook’s Vice-President for Global Affairs and Communications. In February 2022, Zuckerberg elevated Nick Clegg to the position of President for Global Affairs at Meta Platforms.
