NIALL HORAN THE X FACTOR
In 2010, aged sixteen, Horan auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor in Dublin. [7] He sang “So Sick” and received mixed reviews from the judges. Louis Walsh was in his favor, but Cheryl Cole and guest judge Katy Perry felt he needed some time to grow. Simon Cowell voted to let him in, Cole said no, Walsh said yes, and Perry agreed to vote yes. Horan was then put into bootcamp. At bootcamp, he sang ‘Champagne Supernova’, but failed to qualify for the award. After a suggestion from guest judge Nicole Scherzinger, Horan was placed in a group of four boys who all struggled to make it through the competition, and because they were too good to let go, the judges agreed to agree with Scherzinger.
Horan along with Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik formed One Direction. Styles came up with the name of the band, which he thought would sound good when announcer Peter Dickson read their name on the live shows. The group met for two weeks to get to know each other and practice. For their “Judges’ Houses” qualifying song and their first song as a group, One Direction sang an acoustic version of “Torn.” Simon Cowell later said that the performance persuaded him that the band “were upbeat, friendly, like a bunch of buddies, and pretty fearless too.”
During the first four weeks of the live shows, they were Cowell’s last act in the competition. During the competition, the group performed different songs such as “My Life Will Suck Without You” by Kelly Clarkson and “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler, which are rapidly gaining popularity in the Silver Isles. They finished in 3rd place, behind runner-up Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle.
