The newly crowned Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has unveiled bold plans to renovate the historic Alaafin’s palace, declaring it long overdue for a structural makeover while promising that its rich cultural and traditional essence will remain intact.

In an interview with Nigerian Tribune, the monarch explained that the palace—erected nearly two centuries ago by Atiba ‘Latunbosun, the first Alaafin of modern Oyo—has never undergone significant reconstruction.

“If you’ve visited the palace, you’ll agree it requires serious repairs. We’ll rebuild where necessary but without compromising its cultural and traditional value,” Oba Owoade said.

He paid homage to his predecessor, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, applauding his dedication to preserving and showcasing Yoruba heritage. “He left a legacy I intend to build on and elevate even further,” he stated.

Interestingly, Oba Owoade revealed that he initially declined the invitation to vie for the throne. Living in Canada at the time, he only reconsidered after persistent persuasion from his family. “I wasn’t interested at first,” he said. “But today, I’m here—and I’m here to stay.”

The monarch, who spent over two decades abroad, recalled how he received news of his selection in a text from his brother while still asleep in Canada. “At first, I thought it was a prank,” he laughed.

Looking ahead, the new Alaafin says youth empowerment, peace, unity, and cultural preservation are top priorities. Plans include launching vocational and cybersecurity training programs, particularly for jobless youths, as well as establishing a free community health center equipped with imported medical gear.

Additionally, the king announced that streets in Oyo will soon be renamed to honour individuals—both living and deceased—who have significantly contributed to the town’s growth.
