National Library of Nigeria Issues Over 26,000 ISBNs in 2024
The National Library of Nigeria, under the leadership of Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, has achieved a significant milestone by issuing over 26,000 International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs) to publishers across the country in 2024.
This feat demonstrates the library’s commitment to supporting the publishing industry and making information more accessible.
Expanding Access, Enhancing Capacity
In an exclusive interview, Prof. Anunobi highlighted the library’s efforts to expand its digital services, including the provision of ISBNs, International Standard Serial Numbers, and newspaper publication indices online.
“The National Library of Nigeria can be counted among the agencies contributing positively to the nation,” Prof. Anunobi said. “We are fostering unity as a family, building the capacity of our staff. We recently employed 103 staff members who will assist in strengthening these bridges. Also, we are adopting automated processes.”
The National Library of Nigeria has also made significant strides in building its capacity, with the recent employment of 103 staff members and the adoption of automated processes.
The library has deposited over 20,000 titles from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, making it a valuable resource for the international community and artificial intelligence.
Bridging the Gap: Challenges and Triumphs
Prof. Anunobi noted that the library has branches in 33 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, while Kebbi, Zamfara, Delta, and Anambra States are still in the process of providing land for the establishment of library offices.
“When I began my role on 14th September 2021, my goal was to build and strengthen bridges,” Prof. Anunobi reflected. “Now, I want to see how we are maintaining these bridges despite various challenges. Tomorrow marks my third year in office as the National Librarian. Over these three years, we have faced both internal and external challenges, which I refer to as ‘all odds’.”
The National Library of Nigeria has indeed faced numerous challenges, including limited staff strength and external factors such as fuel price hikes, which have impacted staff mobility.
However, the library remains undaunted in its mission to provide access to information and support the publishing industry.
In addition to its digital services, the library has also compiled a compendium of numerals and alphabets in indigenous languages, along with other digital services.
The library has subscribed to ProQuest for e-books and provides an Online Public Access Catalogue, making it easier for researchers and publishers to access the information they need.
As the National Library of Nigeria celebrates its achievements, it is clear that the institution is committed to playing a vital role in promoting literacy, education, and access to information in Nigeria.
With the support of the Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, the library is poised to overcome its challenges and continue making significant contributions to the nation.
