Time passes quickly, especially for Naomi Watts. The day before yesterday, an unknown person, today a worthy finalist for the Oscars with a career that is beginning to be important.

Only three years ago no one would have bet on it unless they were crazy. So an eccentric and risky director had to arrive, with a reputation for not being too in her right mind, David Lynch , who made her the protagonist of Mulholland Drive , one of her cinematic follies. Recently arrived at the Olympus of stardom, this blonde temptation from the Antipodes had spent fifteen years of hard work without eating a bagel, getting ahead with determination, when circumstances seemed to force her to throw in the towel.

in 21 gramsmoved the audience with her role as the mother of a family faced with the worst nightmares, when her husband and daughters die in a car accident. But the actress does not seem to believe that “bring up a good reputation and go to sleep.” When they reach the peak of her career, most performers prefer to tread carefully and think long and hard before choosing her next role, afraid of making a wrong move. But Naomi Watts follows the opposite strategy, as she is famous for accepting before reading the script, if she trusts the directors and ensures that she was born to shoot. “The set is my natural element. I don’t feel natural on the red carpet, or doing promotion, or talking about my life. All those things may be necessary for an actor’s career, but I’m not good at them”, she has declared. The projects in which she is involved are very diverse. Two are already finished:We are no longer two , about two married couples; and The Assassination of Richard Nixon , which again pairs her with Sean Penn , based on an authentic conspiracy against the controversial US president. She has just shot two thrillers: Transit , with Ewan McGregor , and Strange Coincidences , with Jude Law and Dustin Hoffman . As if that were not enough, her participation in two other new projects is confirmed, the sequel to The Ring (The signal) and the new version of King Kong prepared by Peter Jackson , after his successful adaptation of Tolkien’s trilogy.

Until she was ten years old, Naomi Watts lived in Shoreham (Great Britain), where she was born on September 28, 1968. As a child, she was not the typical cutesy girl who played with dolls, but rather liked children’s dolls, and she became he climbed trees with his brother Ben’s friends, who ended up being more friends with him than with him. After the death of her father, a sound technician for well-known British musical groups, her mother continually changed residence, because she did not have a defined profession. Finally, the family ended up settling in Australia, where her maternal grandmother lived, when the young Naomi was 14 years old. “It was a very big culture shock, but in the end we got used to it. I ended up liking that country so much that I think going there was the best decision my mother ever made.” She then began to study acting,

In the tests, she coincided with Nicole Kidman , then also unknown, and a friendship arose between the two that lasts until today. Naomi admires Kidman’s ability to deal with fame and get along with the media. “I’m glad that when I started to be known she was a star, because I was able to ask her for advice and also observe her and learn from her experience.” Before leaving Australia, Naomi only had the opportunity to show her qualities in a couple of minor films, such as The First Experience, where she coincided with Kidman herself, and in some television series. Nor were her first steps in American cinema very promising. She debuted in Hollywood with a small role in Matinee , a tribute to Joe Dante .to the B series cinema that went unnoticed, and the mediocre Tank Girl , a by-product that did not exactly open the door for new contracts.

Resigned, Naomi continued interpreting rubbish as Children of the Corn IV , until she got a great opportunity from David Lynch. He intended to make a television series, Mulholland Drive , and signed the actress as the lead. In the end, the ABC network dismissed the project, and the filmmaker turned the script into a feature film. “Nobody believed in me except Lynch, who had to convince everyone that I could do it well,” says Naomi Watts, who was raved about by critics, and who from then on had her choice of projects of more than entity. She opted for a horror film, The Ring (The signal) , a remake of the Japanese film. She was also able to elicit laughs, in both of her forays into comedy:Funeral homes SA and Le divorce .
