N70,000 minimum wage: Civil servants threaten to shut down defaulting states
The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has warned states that refuse to implement the new N70,000 national minimum wage will face severe consequences. The association’s president, Shehu Muhammed, made this threat at their 5th Quadrennial Delegates Conference in Lagos, where he was re-elected as president.
“We’re Coming for You”
Muhammed declared, “For states not ready to implement the new minimum wage, let me tell you categorically, it is impossible. We are coming for them.” He urged state governments to prioritize the welfare of their citizens by implementing the new wage, especially since their incomes have increased due to enhanced allocation from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).
Reducing Wastage and Inflation
To achieve this, Muhammed suggested that states reduce wastages and block leakages of government funds. He also advised embracing the policy of indexing income to correspond with inflation rates. The new president emphasized that the full implementation of the new national minimum wage and its consequential adjustments will be the top priority of Organised Labour.
Support from Trade Union Congress
Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), pledged to support the new executives in protecting workers’ interests. He delivered a solidarity message at the conference, reaffirming the commitment to workers’ welfare.
Key Demands
  • Immediate implementation of the new national minimum wage
  • Reduction of wastages and blockage of government fund leakages
  • Adoption of income indexing to match inflation rates
