There are many beautiful and interesting places in the world that you can visit for your next vacation. Some countries have a larger tourism industry than others, but just about all of them have something to offer. Every year, tens of millions of tourists leave their home country in order to find a new adventure, romance, entertainment, shopping or other experience. Although each country has something to offer its visitors, some destinations are still more popular than others.
In Europe alone were registered 710 million international tourist arrivals or about half of the total number. Southern and Mediterranean Europe drove the growth, however, the Western and Central European countries remain not only the most visited in Europe but also the top tourism destinations in the world.
Let’s quickly break down some travel statistics before delving into the most visited countries in the world, to see what makes them so enticing. According to the World Tourism Organization’s yearly highlights report, there was a growth of 7% in international tourist arrivals in the last 10 years. Europe makes up 51% of the 1,326 million figure, followed by Asia and the Pacific at 24%. Economic gain through tourism peaked at US$ 1,340 billion, divided up between Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and the Americans.

1. France
Arrivals: 89 million visitors
France is the most visited country in the world with an estimated number of 89 million visitors in 2019. It’s fair to say that there has been a long-standing rivalry between the French and the British, partly because we Brits think we’re better than them (deep down, we know we’re not).
France wears its culture in both famous sites and everyday surroundings, patched together with picturesque villages and seductive cities. The country’s magnificent castles, palaces, and cathedrals pull off the gaudy decor with a nonchalance owing to its long centuries of royal past. France is a transcontinental country predominantly located in Western Europe and spanning overseas regions and territories in the Americas and the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Arrivals: 84 million visitors
Mostly located on the Iberian Peninsula, Spain is the second most visited country in Europe with an estimated number of 84 million visitors in 2019. Spain has 47 UNESCO world heritage sites, numerous beaches on the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and numerous festivals that bring together people from all across the world. Many have compared the coastal part of Spain with tropical islands.
The views whiz by like a photographer’s reel, Before departing for the enigmatic Alhambra in Granada or the flamenco palaces of Seville, congregate around Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter and peruse the experimental works of Gaudi. Additionally, the northern cities of Bilbao and San Sebastian provide mouthwatering pintxos and cutting-edge architecture to satisfy your appetite.

Arrivals: 79 million visitors
Despite the lowest increase in tourist arrivals year on year, the US holds strong as the third most visited country in the world with an estimated number of 79 million visitors in 2019. It has more famous cities than arguably any other country in the world New York, LA, San Francisco, Miami and Chicago being just some of them. There’s plenty for cultural vultures (New Orleans, Austin, Boston) and nature lovers to Yosemite, Grand Prismatic Spring and Grand Canyon are just a few of the many national parks full of weird and wonderful things.

Arrivals: 66 million visitors
China is the most visited country in Asia and the fourth most visited country in the world. A total of 66 million tourists visited China in 2019. Some famous tourist destinations in China are the Great Wall of China, the Terracotta army, and the Summer Palace.
China’s size and breadth of life are difficult to convey, and it is this irresistible characteristic that draws people in again and time again. The country memorializes some and forgets others, in a mysterious and transparent way at the same time. Alongside rapidly developing cities are decaying villages, the time-worn Great Wall is unpolished next to the vibrant colours of Buddhist temples, and water towns are a far cry from the desert-brushed edges of the rural sprawl.

Whether you are a fan of art, architecture, or nature, Italy will not disappoint you. Around 65 million people visited Italy in 2019 making it the fifth most visited country in the world.
Home to numerous castles, palaces, cathedrals, vineyards and beaches, the country is also known for its influential art, architecture and culture. The Vatican Museums located in the heart of Rome are another attraction for many. Rome itself is the third most visited city in Europe, after Paris and London. Florence, Venice, Milan and Naples are among the most visited cities in Italy.

Istanbul is probably the dream of every traveller. The meeting point of the occidental and oriental cultures, Istanbul was established in 660 BCE and was known as Constantinople before the Ottomans conquered the city. Turkey is the sixth most visited country with an estimated number of 51 million visitors in 2019.

From great beaches to cultural and archaeological sites, Mexico provides tourists with soo many flavours with an estimated number of 45 million visitors in 2019.
In addition to the city’s inexhaustible cultural richness, there are also stunning rainforests, volcanoes, deserts, and coastlines. Adventures for divers and hikers alike may be found in Mexico’s unending natural beauty. To take advantage of everything Oaxaca has to offer, climb its steep slopes or plunge deep into the Caribbean.

It shares borders with Denmark to the north, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, France to the southwest, and Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands to the west. Travellers to any of these countries can easily access Germany by train or plane.
