She played a woman who put the King of the Monkeys in check in “Tarzan and the Woman-Devil”. Belgian actress Monique van Vooren died of cancer at the age of 92 at her New York residence on January 25, 2020.

Born on March 25, 1927 in Brussels, Monique Bronz –her birth name– was a model, beauty queen and skateboarding champion in her country, before moving to Italy to make her film debut, with a small role alongside Vittorio de Sica in Tomorrow will be late . She then moved to the United States, where she starred in Kurt Neumann ‘s film about the hero of the jungle, played by Lex Barker . It was up to her to give life to Lyra, an unscrupulous woman who organized an expedition to kill all the elephants that came within her reach. 

Despite being a B-series film, his work heralded a successful career. However, he then limited himself to appearing briefly in the start of  Ten Thousand Bedrooms , Dean Martin ‘s first film after parting ways with Jerry Lewis , and in Gigi . For a long time he was a regular presence on game shows and variety shows on American television. In 1971 he would return to Italy, led by the legendary Pier Paolo Pasolini , for a minor role in The Decameron . In addition to playing a villain, Miss Clean, Penguin’s henchman, in the Batman series , she collaborated with Andy Warhol ‘s factory, playing the mother of the protagonist in Meat for Frankenstein , and had a cameo in  Oliver Stone ‘s Wall Street .

Monique van Vooren also tried her luck as a singer, recording an album. She and she appeared several times in Broadway productions, such as “Man on the Moon,” written by John Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas. She was divorced twice before dating New York businessman Gerard Walter Purcell, with whom she was married until his death in 2002. He was the father of her only child, Eric Purcell, an occasional actor in titles like Wall Street 2: Money never sleeps .
