Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Arabic: محمد بن راشد راشد آل مكتوم , Muḥammad bin Rāshid al Maktūm) called His Majesty Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, born July 15, 1949 in Dubai (age: 70), is the vice -President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and ruler of the Emirate of Dubai since joining in 2006, following the death of his brother Sheikh Maktoum.

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the third of four sons. He took private tutoring lessons before starting his formal studies, then studied at the Bell School of Languages ​​at the University of Cambridge.

In 1995, Sheikh Mohammed became Crown Prince of Dubai , with the main objective of overseeing the transformation of this small piece of desert into the most luxurious tourist and commercial destination in the world. To this end, he has contributed to the development of the Palm Islands, the Burj al-Arab hotel, the Burj Khalifa skyscraper, the Dubai World Cup and the Godolphin stables.

The Prince embarked on reforms in the UAE government, including the Federal Strategy in April 2007. In 2010, he launched the UAE Vision 2021 with the aim of making the UAE “one of the best countries in the world” d by 2021.

Passionate about riding, he is the founder of the Maktoum family’s Godolphin racing stable and the owner of Darley, a thoroughbred breeding operation that operates in six countries. In 2012, he rode Madji Du Pont 160 km to win the FEI World Endurance Championship.

He is a recognized poet in his mother tongue Arabic. He has very close and friendly relations with Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

Sheikh Mohammed has been responsible for the creation and growth of a number of Dubai businesses and economic assets, some of which are held by two companies he owns, Dubai World and Dubai Holding .

Dubai World was launched on July 2, 2006, as a holding company consolidating a number of assets including logistics company DP World , property developer Nakheel Properties and investment company Istithmar World. With more than 50,000 employees in more than 100 cities around the world, the group has real estate, logistics and commercial investments in the United States, the United Kingdom and South Africa.

Dubai Holding develops and manages hospitality, business parks, real estate and telecommunications through four operating units: Jumeirah Group, TECOM Investments, Dubai Properties Group and Emirates International Telecommunications . The company’s investment group operating units include Dubai Group and Dubai International Capital .

Sheikh Mohammed had at least six marriages in his life, His first marriage was to his first cousin Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum (ref. 5) , a member of the ruling family of Dubai by birth, whom he married in 1979. She is the First Lady of Dubai and the mother of twelve children of Sheikh Mohammed, including his heir apparent, Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum (born 1982), the Crown Prince of Dubai. In September 2015, Mohammad’s eldest son, Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed, died of a heart attack.

His sixth marriage was to Princess Haya bint Hussein , daughter of King Hussein of Jordan and half-sister of King Abdullah II of Jordan. The couple married on April 10, 2004 and have two children, a daughter, Al-Jalila, born on December 2, 2007, and a son, Zayed, born on January 7, 2012.

Sheikh Mohammed announces the arrival of his son Zayed on Twitter. The first woman to represent her native Jordan in international equestrian sport and a participant in the Summer Olympics in show jumping in 2000, she served two terms as President of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports.

In 2019, Princess Haya hid in London with her two children and tens of millions of dollars, having first fled to Germany after her marriage to Sheikh Mohammed broke down.

Career and Timeline

His father appointed him to head the ‘Dubai Police’ and the ‘Dubai Defense Force’ upon his return to Dubai from his military training. Soon the British forces withdrew from the States of Truth. He became the first defense minister of the newly formed United Arab Emirates, in December 1971.
During this period, there were several skirmishes between rival tribes in a struggle for power. He was instrumental in defeating the coup against the ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah in January 1972.

He was involved in the negotiations when ‘JAL 404’ flight, hijacked by the Japanese Red Army, landed in Dubai in 1973. He was also involved in the negotiations with the hijackers of ‘KLM 861’.

He was also responsible for the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority. He was instrumental in launching the Dubai-based airline ‘Emirates’ in October 1985. Emirates later became one of the world’s leading airlines. His involvement in aviation led him to inaugurate the first ‘Dubai Airshow’ in 1985. The show remains the witness of some of the biggest aviation affairs in the region each year.
His older brother, Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, made him “Crown Prince of Dubai” by signing two decrees in January 1995. Mohammed became the ruler of Dubai in January 2006, following his brother’s death.

Subsequently, he was appointed Vice President of the United Arab Emirates by the Federal National Council, and in February 2006 President Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan appointed him Prime Minister of the UAE.

As Prime Minister of his country, he carried out strategic reforms of the governance of the Federation, in order to improve coordination and planning in the social, economic, legislative and judicial fields at the federal and local levels. He released ‘Vision 2021′ in February 2010. It was a plan that was considered a masterpiece in terms of long-term strategy and national agenda.

He announced the “  Dubai Internet City ” project, which quickly became a technology hub and free trade zone that attracted investment from around the world (ref. 10) . This led to the creation of ‘Dubai Media City’, a tax-free hub for media organisations. He also participated in the creation of other hubs, such as ‘Dubai Healthcare City’ and ‘Dubai Knowledge Village’.

  • Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s eldest son, Rashid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, by his eldest wife Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, died on September 18, 2015, aged 33, from a heart attack.
  • Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum is the second son of Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum. On February 1, 2008, he was named Crown Prince of Dubai.
  • Sheikh Mohammed was responsible for the launch of Emirates Airline, as well as the development of Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport. He was also behind the creation of FlyDubai, a low-cost common carrier.
  • Upon his return from military training in Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed’s father appointed him Chief of Dubai Police and Dubai Defense Force, which later became part of the Union Defense Force.
