Albom saw his teacher on television during a Nightline interview with Ted Koppel in 1995. Feeling guilty for never having contacted his teacher, he decided to give him a call and they eventually met.
He started visiting her more often every Tuesday to discuss life and death. Schwartz was then suffering from a terminal illness called ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Albom searched for a way to pay his teacher’s medical bill while trying to find a publisher for his book about their visits.
After searching for a publisher with everyone rejecting it, Albom’s idea was accepted by Doubleday’s publishers shortly before his teacher’s death. The book, published in 1997 became popular and made a brief appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The book sold over 14 million copies and became the New York Times bestseller list for 205 weeks in 1998.

MITCH ALBOM QUOTES
All endings are a beginning. We just didn’t know it at the time.
Love is how you stay alive even after you’re gone.
The only time we waste is the time we spend thinking we are alone.
The most important thing in life is to learn to give love and let it in.
Sometimes when you sacrifice something valuable, you don’t really lose it. You are just passing it on to someone else.
Strangers are just family members you haven’t met yet.
Sacrifice is part of life. It’s supposed to be. It’s not something to regret. It is something to aspire to.
You are not a wave, you are part of the ocean.
If you’re still fighting aging, you’ll still be unhappy because it’s going to happen anyway.
People are only mean when they’re threatened, and that’s what our culture does. That’s what our economy does.
