Personal trainer
As a top notch ballerina, Misty always needs to stay physically fit. She starts her day with 90 minutes of ballet classes and then rehearses up to 7 hours 5 days a week, doing cardio workouts in between. Like any other dancer, she has been plagued with a number of injuries. When she was injured and on hiatus in 2012, she turned to ballet classes to maintain technique and form.
Her diet also played a major role in her performance and agility. She began consuming mostly fish and vegetables and limiting her intake of empty calories, which in turn increased her energy levels and helped her perform better.
Your daily food intake looks like this:
- Breakfast – She starts her day with a muffin or bagel with spring cream cheese and iced coffee.
- Lunch – In the afternoon, enjoy a spinach salad with pecans, goat cheese, dried cranberries, and a vinaigrette dressing.
- Dinner – She ends the day with fish like grilled salmon, roasted onions, carrots and butternut squash with rosemary, garlic, salt and pepper. She eats an after-dinner dessert, such as peanut butter cookies, and occasionally drinks prosecco (Italian white wine) to maintain a balanced diet.

Misty Copeland Fakten
- Misty distinguished herself as the first African American dancer to be promoted to principal dancer in American Ballet Theater’s 75-year history on June 30, 2015.
- In 2015, she was named to Time Magazine’s list of “100 Most Influential People in the World” and appeared on its cover. She became the second dancer, preceded by dancer Bill T. Jones in 1994.
- While a student at Dana Middle School, she became the captain of the drill team, alongside sixth grade treasurer and hall monitor.
- Noting Misty’s natural grace and poise, her Dana Drill Team trainer, Elizabeth Cantine, invited her to attend friend Cynthia Bradley’s free ballet classes at the local Boys & Girls Club.
- At age 13, she began studying ballet at the San Pedro Dance Center, where Bradley picked her up from school due to her mother and sister’s busy work schedule.
- It was only after three months of ballet studies that Misty nailed the toe – a position that allows a ballet dancer to support their weight on the tip of their toes while wearing pointe shoes.
- Since Sylvia wanted her daughter to stop ballet, Bradley persuaded her mother to let Misty stay with her (Bradley’s) family and even offered to host her.
- Both mother and daughter signed a management and lifelong contract with Bradley whereby Misty spent her weekdays with the Bradleys and her weekends with her mother, who was a 2 hour bus ride away.
- She won a national ballet competition and landed her first solo role when she turned 14.
- She first caught media attention when she appeared as Clara on The Chocolate Nutcracker at San Pedro High School, which was attended by 2000 guests. She only achieved this achievement 8 months after her ballet training.
- Misty starred in The Chocolate Nutcracker , an African American version of the famous story narrated by Debbie Allen. She performed alongside the LA Academy of Fine Arts at UCLA’s Royce Hall. Her role was changed to include ethnic dances.
- A 15-year-old Misty won first prize at the Los Angeles Music Center’s Spotlight Awards held at the Chandler Pavilion in 1998. She admitted it was the first time she felt nervous about entering a competition.
- The Los Angeles Times recognized her victory at the 10 th Annual Competition Among Southern California’s Gifted High School Students, which named her the best young dancer in the Los Angeles area.
- In 1998 she attended a summer workshop at the San Francisco Ballet School, which along with the American Ballet Theater and the New York City Ballet are the top three major classical ballet companies in the United States
- During her 6 week workshop she was placed in the most advanced classes and her tuition and expenses were covered under the scholarship program. She was offered a full-time student position with the San Francisco Ballet, but turned it down, hoping to perform with the American Ballet Theatre.
- In 1998, she became embroiled in a custody battle involving her mother and her custodians – the Bradleys. With Misty Copeland’s mother resenting her allegiance to the Bradley, Copeland filed for emancipation from her mother. In return, her mother filed a restraining order against the Bradleys, their five-year-old son, and Copeland’s hired attorney.
- The case was tried before the Supreme Court of the Federal Republic of Los Angeles. Misty eventually withdrew her emancipation petition after her mother assured the court that Misty could always dance. Both the emancipation papers and the restraining orders were dropped.
- Copeland began taking ballet classes at the Lauridsen Ballet Center with a new teacher who was a former ABT dancer, Diane Lauridsen.
- She performed with ABT as part of their 1999 and 2000 full-scholarship summer intensive programs. She was named an ABT National Coca-Cola Scholar in 2000.
- In September 2000 she joined the ABT Studio Company and played pas de deux in Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty. But 8 months after joining, she had to sit out due to a lumbar spine fracture.
- At 19, her puberty was delayed, which is common among ballet dancers. As a result, she was prescribed birth control pills that made her gain 10 pounds in a month. She became aware of her large body and struggled with image problems and eating disorders.
- After a positive comeback, she received rave reviews for her performances and was named Dance Magazine’s 25 to Watch in 2003.
- 2004 proved to be her breakthrough when she was included in former ABT dancer Rosalie O’Connor’s picture book, Getting Closer: A Dancer’s Perspective.
