- In recognition of his charity work and the positive impact he has had on people in his community, he was honored with the NHL Foundation Player Award in 2012.
- In his spare time he organizes and oversees the hockey camps in Ottawa, Kingston and his hometown of Peterborough. The Hockey Ministries International supports him in organizing these camps.
- During his childhood he honed his skills by joining the Peterborough Minor Hockey Association (OMHA).
