He only made five films, but he left his mark on the history of Spanish cinema with his first film, “La tía Tula”, based on the homonymous work by Miguel de Unamuno. Jaén director Miguel Picazo died on April 23, 2016 at the age of 89 in the town of Guarromán, according to a statement signed by Francisco Reyes, president of the Jaén Provincial Council. “His work of him has left a very important mark on our cinema and his death has left a great void in the culture of this province, which he has so much revered and loved so much,” explains Reyes.

Born on March 27, 1927, in Cazorla, Miguel Picazo de Dios studied Law and Psychology, before becoming an outstanding student at the Institute for Cinematographic Research and Experiences, later the Official Film School, along with colleagues such as  Carlos Saura , or  José Luis Borau , who would later create the New Spanish Cinema.

She made her feature film debut in 1964 with  La tía Tula , a round adaptation of the novel by  Miguel de Unamuno , with an immense  Aurora Bautista  in the skin of the character. The jury of that year’s San Sebastian Festival, chaired by Nicholas Ray , awarded him the prize for best director and for best Spanish-language film.

Although at the time it raised great expectations, the truth is that the rest of Miguel Picazo’s career was far from up to par. His other four films,  Dark Dreams of August ,  The Clear Motives of Desire ,  The Man Who Knew Love , and the dark  Outside the Walls , adaptation of a novel by  Jesús Fernández Santos , do not have anywhere near the same interest as his first film. of the.

“The truth is that I have made little cinema… I should have shot more… But I have not sold myself well, I have not connected with the producers,” the filmmaker commented in an interview. Over the years he has shot episodes of television series, such as  Crónicas de un pueblo, Novela  and  Sonatas . He also appeared on several occasions as an actor in films by director friends, who gave him brief but well-remembered roles, such as the doctor from  The Spirit of the Beehive , and especially that  Thesis professor , who directs the work on the snuff-movies of  Ana Torrent .
