It is often the case that the Oscar opens the doors to new and improved possibilities. A living example of this is Michael Shannon, who’s nomination for Best Supporting Role for Revolutionary Road , has made it possible for him to get his first leading roles.

It is not at all unusual that among the Oscar nominations for the best supporting actors and actresses, more than one name slips through that is unknown to the general public. It is also not surprising that the mere award nomination changes the working lives of the lucky ones. A good example of this is Michael Shannon, a name and face unknown to most, who thanks to his nomination has begun to play his first leading roles.

Shannon was born on August 7, 1974 in Kentucky. The beginnings of it were in the theater, to later move to television and the cinema. In the world of celluloid is where she has developed most of her career since she debuted in 1993 with a small role in Caught in Time . Since then, her filmography has a point of “groundhog day” in that supporting roles have followed one another over and over again. Thus, she has participated with small characters in titles as varied as Chain Reaction (1996), Cecil B. Demented (2000), Pearl Harbor (2001), Vanilla Sky (2001), 8 Miles (2002) and Two Bad Boys II .(2003). Her first break as a lead came in the horror film Bug (2002), where she shared a motel room with a distraught Ashley Judd . As an exception to every rule, after this minor title her career continued with small roles in weight films such as World Trade Center (2006) and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007). Then Sam Mendes gave him the big break as him with the “sick” John Grings in Revolutionary Road (2008). His interpretation of the unbalanced and unpleasant son of Kathy Bates has earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting role.

The secondary effects of the nomination have not been long in coming, since shortly after he shot his second film as a leading man –this time absolute–, The Missing Room . Shannon has played a detective who is commissioned to bring home a man who took advantage of the 9/11 attacks to disappear and pose as one of the many corpses left behind by the tragedy. This protagonist does not seem to have been anecdotal, as he is currently shooting My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done under the orders of the great Werner Herzog , a story based on true events about a man who began to have mystical experiences that led him to kill to your brother. It is not necessary, however, to resort to mysticism to know that 2008 has been the year of Shannon. He not only rolledRevolutionary Road with actors of the stature of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet , but also his daughter Sylvia was born, the fruit of the marriage that unites him with Kate Arrington.
