REFEREE MICHAEL OLIVER

After being introduced to refereeing by his father, Michael quickly rose through the ranks and in 2007 he was promoted to the National List of Referees. In the same year, he successfully refereed the 2007 National Conference play-off final to become the youngest football referee to officiate at Wembley Stadium.

Michael had also been the Football League’s youngest assistant referee, the Football League’s youngest referee, and was set to become the Premier League’s youngest fourth official.

In 2000, Michael’s father Clive refereed the 2009 Ligue 2 play-off final while his son refereed the next day’s match, the 2009 Ligue 1 play-off final. He would have become the youngest Premier League referee in January 2010 when he was about to referee a game between Portsmouth and Fulham. Bad weather, however, caused the game to be postponed and ankle surgery led to him being sidelined until April.

In August 2010, Michael broke Stuart Attwell’s record as the youngest Premier League referee after being promoted to the Select group. His first game was between Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers when he was 25 years and 182 days old. For the 2013 League Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, Michael was appointed as the fourth official.

In April 2013, Oliver refereed the FA Cup semi-final with Wigan Athletic playing against Millwall and this made him the youngest referee to take charge of an FA Cup semi-final. In the 2014 FA Community Shield between Manchester City and Arsenal, Michael was the referee and Arsenal won the game 3–0.

He also took part in the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League as a referee, managing three group stage matches. He successfully refereed the second leg of the 2017-2018 UEFA Champions League quarter-final between Juventus and Real Madrid. Real Madrid became the first leg winners with three goals and Juventus had none. This result forced Juventus to plan a 3-0 victory for the game to be extended.

Michael Oliver Buffon

Juventus had a 3-0 lead until Michael awarded Real Madrid a penalty in the 93rd minute. This was after Medhi Benatia challenged Lucas Vázquez in the box. After a penalty was awarded, some Juventus players, led by captain and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, started a confrontation with the referee (Michael). Oliver then pulled out a red card and showed it to Buffon for dissenting, with nine yellow cards issued in the game.

Juventus second goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny was substituted and the penalty was converted by Christiano Ronaldo in the 98th minute. The game ended in a 4-3 aggregate victory for Real Madrid to advance to the semi-final.

After this particular match, Michael’s wife received threatening and abusive text messages through her mobile number, after posting them on social media. Police have opened investigations into the case as well as reports of knocking on the front door of their home and abuse in the letterbox. On May 11, UEFA charged Buffon for the post-match comments about Oliver to UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body banning him from three matches of UEFA’s competitive matches. UEFA until June 5.
