Michael Clarke Duncan, the man who worked miracles on death row in “The Green Mile,” has died. The big, 6-foot-1, 54-year-old African-American actor passed away from a heart condition, and had actually been hospitalized for it in July.
He was affectionately known as “Big Mike” this actor born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 10, 1957. Raised by his single mother, Michael Clarke Duncan grew up in a marginal neighborhood environment where alcohol and drugs were a real temptation . He focused on his studies, and because of his physique it would be said that he was the ideal man for sports, American football and so on, but his mother did not like the idea, so he turned his attention to the interpretation. Which is not to say that he immediately established himself as an actor, since after finishing high school he worked digging trenches for the Chicago Gas Company. However, he was able to achieve his acting dream more and directed his course to Hollywood, where he reconciled extra roles with the work of a bodyguard, and it is that with the great size of him, Michael Clarke Duncan;
Then came the end of the world. In other words, Michael Bay ‘s meteorite crashed against him for good in Armageddon (1998). An adrenaline-pumping blockbuster, he put it in the spotlight. He opened the spigot of supporting roles, which gave every impression that they were those he could wait for. After being directed by Warren Beatty that same year at Bulworth , came the role that brought him fame and even an Oscar nomination: the death row inmate with special powers who dazzles his guardian Tom Hanks in The Green Mile ( Frank Darabont , 1999), based on the Stephen King novel .
No other role in his career had the impact that this one had, he was a sweet man with an incredible gift, those heartfelt phrases remain in the memory, “I couldn’t help you boss, I tried to get him back but it was too late.” But he no longer lacked work, in action movies and special effects that required a strong guy – Planet of the Apes (2001) , The Scorpion King (2002), Daredevil (2003), The Island (2005), Street Fighter: The Legend (2009)…–, or in comedies where his huge physique helped in the hilarious scenes – False Appearances (2000), School for Scoundrels (2006), Past Turns (2006),Singles Party (2007)…–
With a recurring role on the television series The Finder , he leaves several films pending release, such as In the Hive and The Challenger . The actor leaves behind his girlfriend, Omarosa Manigault, who was the one who reported the news of the death.
