Biography
Mia Kirshner was born on January 25, 1975 in Toronto, Ontario. She is the daughter of Etti (Henrietta) who was a teacher and Sheldon Kirshner who was a journalist and wrote for The Canadian Jewish News. Mia Kirshner is a grandchild of Holocaust survivors; her father was born in the Bad Reichenhall displaced people camp in Germany in 1946. And, he had met Mia Kirshner’s mother, a Jewish refugee from Bulgaria, after they fled to Israel. Her paternal grandparents are Polish Jews.
Mia Kirshner was raised in a middle-class family and graduated from Jarvis Collegiate Institute after attending Forest Hill Collegiate Institute. She studied Russian literature and the 20th-century film industry at McGill University in Montreal. Early Career
Mia Kirshner started her career in 1989 in Loving the Alien, a second-season episode of War of the Worlds as both Jo and her doppelgänger. She made her film debut when she was 18 in Love and Human Remains where she convinced her father to sign a nudity waiver to play a dominatrix. Then she starred in Atom Egoyan’s Exotica the year after that. In 1996, she appeared in The Crow: City of Angels and she also played Kitty Scherbatsky in the 1997 version of Anna Karenina.
Mia Kirshner appeared in the first three episodes of 24 as the assassin Mandy in 2001. The role which she repeated for the second season’s finale and in the latter half of the show’s fourth season. Two years later, she starred in The Black Dahlia where she played Elizabeth Short, a young aspiring actress. Although the film was critically attacked, many reviews applauded her performance. In 2010, Mia Kirshner took a guest role, co-starring as Isobel Flemming in The Vampire Diaries.

After seven years of production, Mia Kirshner published the book I Live Here in October 2018. She co-produced the book with Paul Shoebridge and Michael Simons along with James Mackinnon. Famous comic and graphic artists including Phoebe Gloeckner and Joe Sacco contributed original work to the book. And, Random House/Pantheon published it in the US. Amnesty International provided logistical help for it and will earn money from the sale of the book. Also, the Center for International Studies at MIT invited Mia Kirshner to teach a 4-week course on I Live Here in January 2019 following the publication of the book.
