Biography
M.I Abaga was born Jude Lemfani Abaga on the 4th of October 1981 in Jos, Plateau State. He attended Baptist High School and Calvin College, Michigan, United States, where he bagged a degree in Business and Economics.
M.I’s interest in music began when his mother purchased basic music notations and a 7-key mini piano. He began to venture into hip hop in 1998 sampling musical works from DMX and Lauryn Hill. While attending Calvin College, he performed regularly at the school’s major hip-hop shows and concerts. His impressive rap flows and attitude gained him a third-place finish at the Calvin College show tagged ‘Hip Hopera’ in 2003.
Jude began to sing professionally after returning to Nigeria in 2003. He however rose to prominence in 2006 after releasing his breakthrough single “Crowd Mentality”. Following the miniature success of Crowd Mentality, M.I released one of his critically acclaimed singles “Safe” The song gathered impressive airplay by African radio and music video stations and earned him awards at the Nigerian Music Video Awards, City People, N.E.A, among others.
His debut studio album “Talk About It” was released in 2008. The album gathered awards such as Musician of the Year (Modemen Awards in 2008), and Best Hip Hop Artist (City People Awards). The LP was succeeded by MI 2: The Movie (2010). Four years later, he released The Chairman as his third studio album. In August 2018 he released his fourth studio album A Study On Self Worth: Yxng Dxnzl.

As earlier stated M.I is considered the GOAT of the Nigerian rap industry, his rapping techniques are sometimes compared with successful international rappers such as Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Jay-Z.
M.I Abaga has also received international recognition in South Africa from the popular Channel O music Award, MTVbase Awards, and the American BET Awards. He won Best Hip Hop and Best New Act at the 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards and was nominated in the Best International Act category at the BET Awards 2010.
As a signee of the Chocolate City company, M.I was one of the few conscious rappers with a successful career in the Nigerian music industry. He was the CEO of Chocolate City from 2015 to 2019. He left the label in 2020 after 13 years to launch his own record label Incredible Music.
