Meta Platforms announced the introduction of a new feature called WhatsApp Channels, which aimed at transforming the app into a “private broadcast messaging app.” Initially, users in Colombia and Singapore will have access to Channels, with the company planning to expand availability to more countries in the coming months.
According to Reuters, in a statement released by Meta, Channels will allow users to follow content related to their interests, such as hobbies, sports teams, and updates from local officials. Notably, the profile photos and contact information of channel admins will remain hidden from followers, and followers’ phone numbers will not be disclosed.
The global launch of Channels will include partnerships with prominent organizations like the World Health Organization, FC Barcelona, and Manchester City.
