MERCYME BART MILLARD MERCYME, CAREER

While in high school, Millard had aspirations of becoming a professional soccer player, a dream that ceased to exist when he injured both ankles during a high school soccer tournament. As an option, Millard joined the choir on an optional basis. His father, Arthur Wesley Millard Jr., died of cancer on November 11, 1991, during Bart’s freshman year of college his young pastor asked him to serve with the church’s youth worship group.

Millard seized the opportunity and operated as video and sound engineer for the group. James (Jim) Bryson played piano as a member of this church band, he later played with Millard and the worship band while touring Switzerland. This tour motivated Millard to attempt a full-time musical career.

Millard along with two of his friends, Michael John Scheuchzer and James Phillip Bryson moved to Oklahoma City and started MercyMe. Since its inception, the group has recorded six independent albums, two exclusive albums, nine studio albums, two Christmas albums and one compilation album.

Millard made a commitment to his grandmother to write and record an album of hymns for her to listen to before his death, which he faithfully honored with Hymn No. told how he was motivated by his grandmother’s faith. Millard recorded the second of his two hymn albums because he realized that the church he attended did not sing hymns and he wanted his children to grow up in the knowledge of hymns.

Millard said his father deeply inspired him on his musical journey when it came to hymn albums, drawing inspiration from Willie Nelson and Louie Prima in particular. He said those impacts wouldn’t be relevant to MercyMe because MercyMe is similar to Coldplay, whereas those anthemic efforts are more Frank Sinatra-style.

Millard said he started his solo effort in order to give expression to musical styles that would not have suited MercyMe. He also said they sang a Hank Williams song called “I Saw the Light” in his church growing up.

The title of Hymned Again is an “ironic” connecting to the debut album. His debut album was an attempt to create songs he didn’t particularly care about, and the second album was produced to achieve a Kansas City swing/shuffle vibe in the style of Louie Prima, Harry Connick Jr. , and Jamie Cullum, who is what has been accomplished.

According to Greer, this album was very implicated of She by Connick, which was done five or six times according to Millard. He said he achieved this by listening to a stack of albums by these composers. He also said that the songs on the album Hymned Again were musically in the tradition of the Great Awakening era, but that was not done on purpose.

Millard said the only original song on the album, titled “Jesus Cares for Me,” was composed solely by Thad Cockrell, a song the musician says “could have been written 50 or 60 years ago.” . Millard strongly invited Vince Gill to participate in the album. On another ‘Hymned’ effort, Millard replied, ‘Man, I hope so.’

Millard is featured as a vocalist in “I See Love,” a 2004 song by Third Day and Steven Curtis Chapman. He also guest-starred in Phil Wickham’s 2009 song, “Safe.”
