Born on 28 August 1984 in Lagos State, she is the fourth of seven children in her family. Although she began her primary education in Calabar, Cross River State, her father – a navy officer – was eventually deployed to Lagos State.
Consequently, she resumed her education at the Nigerian Navy Primary School in Lagos before proceeding to Rivers State Secondary School for her secondary education, in addition to the Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Career
Shortly after her secondary education, she auditioned for a role in The Maid and also acted in other movies such as Hustlers, Baby Oku in America, and War in the Palace.
Mercy won an award for best-supporting Actress at the 2009 African Movie Award ceremony for her performance in the movie Live to remember and also the best actress award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for her role in the comedy Movie Dumebi the Dirty Girl.
She was once again the most searched Nigerian celebrity on Google, a title she held in 2012. On April 1, 2017, she was appointed as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) for Entertainment, Arts, and Culture for Kogi State.
Meanwhile, Mercy Johnson was once barred from performing because she was too pricey. On November 3, 2013, Nollywood movie marketers threatened to ban her from the industry because of her excessive demands.
