Career & Timeline
Childhood
- Mehdi Dehbi was born in Belgium in the same hospital that later became the Gretry Academy, his first theater and music school at the age of 10. At the age of 16, he obtained the main role in his first feature film, The Murdered Sun (The Murdered Sun), directed by Abdelkrim Bahloul and produced by the Dardenne brothers, for which he received his first nomination as best actor at the Joseph Plateau Awards.
- After studying drama and music at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, then at the CNSAD in Paris, and finally at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, he continued his career in cinema and theater and, in 2012, directed staged his first play, Les Justes Assassins (The Just Assassins) by Albert Camus, at the Théâtre de Liège and on tour in France and Germany.
- He was nominated as the Best New act as a director for his work at the Critics Award in 2014.
Carrier start
- Mehdi seems to have always been fascinated by the theater, and even after making his debut in television and cinema, he continued to be interested in the stage. At first he was just a performer, starting with the ageless story of “Romeo and Juliet” in 2007.
- However, as he made more stage appearances, he had to realize he could do more than just perform. He therefore tried his hand at directing a play “Les Justes” in 2013.
- He may not have liked this experience because there is not yet a play in which he is the director.
The main role in the netflix series “Messiah”
- the Belgian actor stars in ‘Messiah’, which Netflix subscribers are threatening to cancel their subscription after seeing the trailer aired two days before Mehdi’s 34th birthday.
- Christians are particularly outraged because Mehdi’s character name translates to “Antichrist,” and they say it’s about persuading people to follow evil.
- With such threats, those who watched the trailer are keen to know who in their right mind would dare to play the fake Messiah, so let’s talk a little more about Mehdi.
Criticism and controversy
- Mehdi was part of a controversial series which premiered on Netflix in January 2020. However, the film could see him become either a star or the world’s most hated man, given that he played Al Massih. Since the series is titled ‘Messiah’, Al Massih is presumed to be the Antichrist, as people don’t understand him.
- People have speculated that this might be the producers’ way of preparing us for the Antichrist.

Little known facts
- Although different sources say that the first movie Mehdi starred in was ‘The Murdered Sun’ or ‘The Murdered Sun’, these are different translations of the movie’s title. Mehdi was only 16 when he was chosen for “Le Soleil Assassiné”. It is based on the mysterious murder of Jean Senac, a poet who died in 1973. Jean moved to Algeria even after independence and ended up under police surveillance.
Mehdi played the role of Hamid, and the film was recognized at the San Sebastian International Film Festival and the Montreal World Film Festival for two awards.
Mehdi is still single. Although he hasn’t revealed the reason he chose to remain single, perhaps the hectic schedule that comes with acting keeps him from mingling with potential partners.
Mehdi played the main role in “He’s My Girl” and “The Other Son”. For him, it was more than just cashing a check, because he learned that human relationships are much more important than the labels used to identify us.
For someone whose career started at 16, you’d expect him to be surrounded by a lot of scandals, but that’s not the case with this actor. Even getting him to talk about himself and his family is a challenge given that there are no reports of where he was educated or facts about his family. The only thing he divulged is his birthday and birthplace.
