Parag Agrawal is an Indian-American technology born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India in 1983/1984 now the chief executive officer (CEO) of Twitter since November 2021.

More so, Agrawal joined Twitter as a distinguished software engineer in 2011 and became the chief technology officer in 2017. On 29 November 2021, Jack Dorsey announced that he was resigning as CEO of Twitter and that Agrawal was replacing him, with immediate effect.

But his lack of name recognition, coupled with a solid technical background, appears to be what some of Twitter’s biggest backers were looking for in the company’s next chapter.

He has been the chief technology officer since 2017, is little known to the public, with even some Twitter insiders saying they were surprised by his appointment.

However, the India-born engineer has been a Twitter veteran and confidant of Mr. Dorsey’s who has been involved in many of the company’s biggest strategic initiatives.

This, moreover was evident when Mr. Dorsey was effusive about his successor, saying in a tweet that the board had run a “rigorous” search for a new chief executive and had “unanimously” endorsed Mr. Agrawal.

“He’s been my choice for some time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs,” Mr. Dorsey, 45, wrote. Meanwhile, in his own message

to employees on Monday, Mr. Agrawal emphasized his knowledge of the company and his kinship with its workers.

“I joined this company 10 years ago when there were fewer than 1,000 employees,” Mr. Agrawal wrote in the company email, which he also tweeted. “I’ve walked in your shoes, I’ve seen the ups and downs, the challenges and obstacles, the wins and the mistakes.

“But then and now, above all else, I see Twitter’s incredible impact, our continued progress, and the exciting opportunities ahead of us.”

Furthermore, Agrawal is expected largely to pick up where Dorsey left off, continuing to fight for users being lured away by competitors like TikTok and Instagram, said Jill Wilson, the chief marketing officer for Esquire Digital.

“Agrawal has his work cut out for him in terms of keeping Twitter relevant and getting the everyday user on board, and monetizing the platform in general,” she said.
