Biography
Aisha Somtochukwu Yesufu was born and raised in Kano State. She faced challenges growing up as a girl in a patriarchal society. By the age of 11, she had lost all her female friends either through marriage or childbirth.
In 1991, she applied to the Nigerian Defence Academy but was rejected because of her gender. She initially attended Usmanu Danfodiyo University in 1992, but the school closed, so she transferred to Ahmadu Bello University to study medicine. Eventually, she completed her education at Bayero University Kano, earning a degree in microbiology.
Aisha’s journey as an activist began when she co-founded the Bring Back Our Girls campaign in 2014, demanding the safe return of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls. Since then, she has continued to fight for justice and human rights, inspiring many others to join her cause.

Personal Life
Aisha got married when she was 24 years old, which is considered late by conservative standards in northern Nigeria. She met her husband, Aliu Osigwe Yesufu, during her time at university on December 13, 1996, at her uncle’s bachelor party. Aisha recalls instantly falling deeply in love with Aliu as soon as she saw him. So, she took the initiative and approached him first. After 16 months, they got married. Aisha’s courage and determination have always been evident, even back then.
Aisha and Aliu have been blessed with two children, a son, and a daughter.
