- McKayla started gymnastics at the age of 2.
- She was featured in a music video for the song Up in the Air (2013) by the band 30 Seconds to Mars .
- She won a silver medal, although she was a crowd favorite, winning gold at the 2012 Olympics. Standing on the podium, she pursed her lips and tried to hide her disappointment. Her picture went viral on the internet when several people turned it into a meme and dubbed it her. McKayla ‘s unimpressed face.
- She credited the memes made of her unimpressed face with good humor and laughed at them throughout all of her TV appearances, such as The Late Show with David Letterman, The Colbert Report and Dancing With the Stars.

- In October 2017, she accused USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar of molesting her from the age of 13 through her entire affiliation with the team. - To curb the intense judgments and towing, McKayla has shut down her official website and deleted her Twitter and Instagram accounts. She stated that she needed to take these measures to regain her sanity.
- After retiring from competitive gymnastics, McKayla revealed that she didn’t eat very healthily in competition and often drank 24 ounces of Coke at a time, which likely aggravated her adrenal fatigue and indirectly contributed to other injuries.
