SENSE8 STAR MAX RIEMELT TALKS ABOUT WORKING WITH MATRIX CREATORS AND FILMING ‘AESTHETIC’ ORGY SCENES
Updated on: May 4, 2017

“Sense8” from the makers of The Matrix is epic global sci-fi about empathy, peppered with intercontinental action sequences and telepathic orgy scenes. “It’s not all about the f**king,” its star Max Riemelt tells us as its second season hits Netflix.
How would you describe Sense8 for people who haven’t seen it?
“It’s about eight people who have the ability to connect with each other in ways they can feel and feel – and they can also appear in each other’s realities. In the first season, they find out, and now that it’s done, they try to find out who’s hunting them and fight this dark force called BPO. And then, everyone also has their own story, and they also have to deal with it. [My character] Wolfgang is involved in the crime scene in Berlin – he had a trauma from his childhood which he resolved by killing almost everyone in his family. Now he must clean up his mess and take on the other Berlin gangsters.
When you first got the script, did you think it was completely crazy?
Yes. I didn’t know what it was going to look like, or even if it was possible to watch it. Going through eight scenarios is intense enough, but I’ve also always wondered about the effect of appearing in these different realities. I love the end result – there’s so much to see and the message itself is beautiful.
The Wachowskis created Matrix and Cloud Atlas – what was it like working with them?
A little intimidating. You work with these geniuses who always know if you’re shy. You have to be brave and very open, you have to have a lot of trust, even if you don’t understand right away.
You mentioned the great graphics – what’s your favorite scene so far?
I love action scenes and club scenes. And orgies – because if you do something new that you’re really scared of or can’t imagine what it’s like, you learn a lot about yourself.
So yes, there have been two orgies so far. Is it really embarrassing afterwards?
No, it becomes… not normal, but you just have to deal with it. If the message behind all this is right, it’s not a real orgy, it’s not about fucking, but more about aesthetics.
There are also loads of scenes where you switch bodies with other characters. What does this mean logistically?
The logistics are in the hands of very professional people in Hollywood. The challenge is just with your own imagination. You always film it in two places, so you have to be in a different environment and sometimes it’s a little hard to remember.
In Season 2, Whispers is the main villain. What can we expect from him or from the story in general?
I can’t give you details, but he’s a bastard and he wants to kill us. We try to stay one step ahead of him or his plans – and track them down.
